This morning, and for the next two days, Bishop John O. Barres, Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, is leading a retreat for the seminarians as part of their two weeks of preparation in anticipation of the beginning of formation and classes for the 2026-2027 Academic Year.

The seminarians are entering a period of silence beginning today at 9:00 AM and continuing through tomorrow at 6:00 PM, a space set apart to quiet the noise, listen for God's voice, and deepen their understanding of each's own Spiritual Autobiography.

Please keep the seminarians in your prayers as they embrace this time of stillness and reflection. "Be still, and know that I am God." — Psalm 46:10

The men of the Discipleship and Propaedeutic Stages visited the St. Frances Cabrini Shrine and The Met Cloisters today, exploring the Catholic history and heritage of New York City.

At the St. Frances Cabrini Shrine, they honored the first U.S. citizen to be canonized. The shrine is also the place where the mortal remains of Saint Frances Cabrini are kept. At The Met Cloisters, they encountered a collection of medieval art and architecture that offers a window into the life and culture of the Church during the Middle Ages.

Together, these visits offered an opportunity to encounter important chapters in the history of the Catholic faith, from the medieval Church to the growth of Catholicism in the United States, while reflecting on the rich tradition of faith they are preparing to serve.

Saint Frances Cabrini, pray for us! May God guide these men as they continue their formation and prepare to serve His Church with faith, courage, and charity. Amen.

Last night the house attended a showing of Les Misérables at Hudson Valley Shakespeare in Garrison, NY. As with the tour of lower Manhattan and the fishing trip, all excursions before and during the year are meant to enhance the formation of the men... while they have a little fun!

Reel Vocations

It's our Third Annual Seminarian Fishing Trip and we're still reeling them in! Before the books, lectures, and long nights of study take over, the seminarians swapped the classroom for the sound and hit the water. Nothing like a little sun, some good-natured competition over who caught the biggest fish, and real brotherhood before diving into a new academic year. Faith, fellowship, and (hopefully) a few fish stories that get bigger every year.

Introducing our Discipleship Stage Seminarians!

We're delighted to welcome our new seminarians beginning the Discipleship Stage this year, alongside those returning for their second year in this stage of formation. Together with Most Reverend James Massa, Rector, and Fr. John Cush, Coordinator of Discipleship stage, these men continue their journey of formation and discernment toward the priesthood. In this stage, they will study philosophy for two years in preparation to study theology.

The Discipleship Stage is a time of deepening one's relationship with Christ, growing in prayer, and being formed in the life of the Church before moving forward toward ordination. Please keep these men — and all our seminarians — in your prayers as they continue to discern and grow in their vocation.

St. Joseph’s Seminary and College held its first full faculty meeting of the 2026–2027 academic year, bringing together full- and part-time faculty, both clergy and laity, as the Dunwoodie community prepares to begin a new year of formation and study.

It was a joy to welcome everyone back to Dunwoodie and to reconnect after the summer months. We missed those members of our faculty who were unable to be with us and look forward to seeing them soon.
There is a wonderful sense of renewed energy, optimism, and shared purpose as a new academic year begins. We look forward with gratitude and hope to all that the Lord has in store for our faculty, seminarians, and students in the months ahead.

His Excellency Bishop Robert Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, hosted a “Back to Seminary” barbecue this evening at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston, Queens. Numerous seminarians of the Diocese of Brooklyn joined Bishop Brennan, His Excellency Bishop James Massa, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn and Rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary, and the diocese’s seminary and vocations formators for the celebration.
