This week our Black History Month Highlights are Katherine Johnson & Mae Jemison!

Katherine Johnson was a brilliant mathematician whose calculations were critical to NASA’s early space missions. Her work helped send the first American into orbit and later ensured the safe flight of the Apollo 13 mission to the Moon. As a Black woman working at NASA during segregation, she broke barriers in STEM and proved that brilliance knows no boundaries.

Mae Jemison made history in 1992 as the first Black woman to travel to space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. A physician, engineer, and astronaut, she combined science with a passion for education and global health. Her achievements continue to inspire young people—especially girls of color—to pursue careers in science and exploration.

Each classroom came up with different ways to honor these women of excellence!

To end out Black History Month, we learned about Bessie Coleman! She was an early American civil aviator. She was the first African-American woman and first Native American to hold a pilot license, and is the earliest known Black person to earn an international pilot's license. She earned her license from the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale on June 15, 1921.

After discussing Bessie Coleman and all her accomplishments, we spent our after noon making our own airplanes in a variety of different ways!

This weeks Black History Highlight : Ruth Elizabeth Wright!

Yellow Springs native Ruth Elizabeth Wright (1920-2013) was among the women of the “Six Triple Eight.” A descendant of slaves and the daughter of a World War I veteran, Wright became an activist through her life experiences growing up in the village dealing with racial and gender discrimination.

The WWII 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was the first and only all-Black female unit to be deployed overseas during WWII. The unit was active from 1945 to 1946 and consisted of 855 women under the command of Major Charity Adams. Their nickname was “Six-Triple Eight” and their motto was “No Mail, Low Morale.” The unit served at home and in Europe where they sorted and routed mail for millions of American service members and civilians. By dividing their work into shifts that ran 365 days a week, the women processed an average of 65,000 pieces of mail per shift. They were given six months to complete the backlog but finished in three months, ultimately delivering mail to more than 7 million soldiers. On 15 March 2016, the U.S. Army Women’s Foundation inducted the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion into the Army Women’s Hall of Fame.

*Fun fact: She is also great grandmother to one of our own students Jordan Wright!

Black History Highlight: Alma Thomas!

Alma Woodsey Thomas (1891 – 1978) was an unconventional artistic figure. Her career as a painter started out late. Alma first had a career as an art teacher, after which she devoted herself to her own art. In 1970, eight years before her death, the artist declared: “Creative art is for all time and it is therefore independent of time. It is of all ages, of every land, and if by this we mean the creative spirit in man which produces a picture or a statue is common to the whole civilized world, independent of age, race and nationality, the statement may stand unchallenged.”

After learning about Miss Thomas and looking at some of her art pieces, we created our own art using her artistic style!
