ON THIS DAY - MARCH 5, 1770 - CRISPUS ATTUCKS

Crispus Attucks is widely recognized as the first person killed in the American Revolution, dying during the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. Attucks, a sailor and dockworker of African and Native American ancestry, was among a crowd of colonists confronting British soldiers stationed in Boston amid rising tensions between the colonies and the British Crown.

The confrontation began as a protest against the presence of British troops and the enforcement of unpopular taxes. As colonists gathered, the situation escalated into a tense standoff. According to historical accounts, Attucks stood near the front of the crowd when British soldiers opened fire. He was struck by multiple gunshots and died at the scene, becoming the first casualty of the conflict
