The Montessori School of Yakima (MSY) was founded in 1965 by a group of committed parents who wanted to bring the Montessori method of education to the children of the Yakima Valley. We operate in accordance with the educational philosophy and methods developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. All of our teachers are Montessori-trained and participate in conferences and seminars to stay well versed on cur

rent trends. After serving the community for 45 years, we have the pleasure of having children of former students enrolled. MSY provides a child-directed, multi-aged learning environment that is specifically suited to follow stages of development for children 3 years to 9 years of age. Areas of study include math, language, music, geography, science, art, sensorial development, and practical life activities. Each child is encouraged to independently explore an array of learning materials that follow a natural progression from concrete to abstract concepts and ideas, thus laying the foundation for a lifetime of learning and living. Montessori is the fastest growing educational method in North America. There are approximately 1,000,000 children enrolled in various Montessori programs and that number increases by about 10% annually. MSY is a non-profit corporation administered by a Board of Directors made up of parents and community members, assisted by the school staff. Parents of enrolled children have a voice in the operational management of the school, and are encouraged to attend the annual meeting as well as monthly board meetings. Parent involvement is also needed and appreciated in school activities and fundraising. It is our hope that the Montessori School of Yakima continues to provide an enriching, peaceful environment in which to nurture the youngest of our community for years to come.

💚 Volunteers are at the heart of the MSY community!

Our school is stronger because of the time, talents, and energy our families share. From helping with school activities to supporting special projects, every contribution makes a difference.

MSY was founded by parents who wanted to bring Montessori education to the Yakima Valley, and parent involvement continues to be an important part of who we are today.

We’re so grateful for everyone who helps make MSY such a special community. 🌱

More volunteer opportunities will be shared soon! Stay tuned for ways to get involved.

“The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist.’” — Maria Montessori

In Montessori, the goal isn’t to do the work for the child, but to guide them toward confidence, independence, and a love of learning. 🌱

When a child becomes fully engaged in their work—choosing, exploring, discovering, and persevering on their own—we see the true impact of Montessori education.

Here’s to creating environments where children can grow into capable, confident, independent learners. 💙

🖍️One of the most unique aspects of Montessori is the mixed-age classroom.

Older children reinforce their knowledge by mentoring younger classmates, while younger students are inspired by what lies ahead.

It's a community built on collaboration—not competition🤝

Grace & Courtesy: Building a Caring Classroom Community 🌱

A new school year is about more than learning lessons—it’s also about learning how to be part of a community.

In the Montessori classroom, children practice kindness, respect, independence, patience, and caring for others through everyday moments. These small acts help children build the confidence and social skills they’ll carry with them far beyond the classroom.

We’re excited to begin the year by building a classroom community where every child feels valued, respected, and connected. 💙

💭One of Maria Montessori's most famous ideas is:

"Never help a child with a task at which they feel they can succeed."

Every child deserves access to a meaningful education that nurtures their curiosity, independence, and unique potential. 💙

At Montessori School of Yakima, we believe that access to Montessori education should extend beyond those who can afford full tuition. **Fundraising and community support help make scholarships and expanded access possible**, allowing more children to experience the Montessori approach.

When our community invests in MSY, we’re investing in children—and in the future they will help shape. 🌱
