Yesterday, members of the Junior League of Yakima had the privilege of touring a space that will soon mean something far greater than walls, rooms and a roof.

It will mean safety. 💜

YWCA Yakima welcomed our members into the historic former St. Elizabeth Nursing School as it is transformed into Rocio’s Place, a new emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence and their children.

There is something meaningful about this building’s next chapter. Once a nursing school and dormitory where generations of women prepared for careers caring for others, it is now becoming a place where individuals and families can find safety, healing and an opportunity to begin again.

The need in our community is significant. Yakima County has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in Washington State, while the demand for safe emergency housing continues to exceed available space.

Through YWCA Yakima’s Bringing It Home II Capital Campaign, community support is helping transform this historic building into 112 emergency shelter beds, approximately tripling YWCA Yakima’s current shelter capacity. More local survivors and families will have somewhere safe to turn when they need it most.

Our tour was also a powerful reminder of what is possible when a community works together.

For more than 90 years, the Junior League of Yakima has worked alongside organizations, leaders and volunteers throughout the Yakima Valley. Since 1934, our members have developed women as leaders while putting that leadership into action through service, partnerships and community investment.

We are grateful to Cheri Kilty, CEO of YWCA Yakima, for leading our tour and sharing the vision for Rocio’s Place. We also thank the YWCA Yakima team and the donors, businesses and community partners helping make this space possible.

This is community in action. Organizations coming together. Women leading. People investing in people. A historic space becoming a place of safety, healing and hope. 💜

The world lost a truly extraordinary woman today. Dolly’s legacy goes far beyond music. She showed us the power of kindness, generosity, hard work & using your success to lift others up.

As we remember Dolly, may we honor her by doing what she did so beautifully: give generously, encourage others, serve our communities & leave a little more good in the world than we found.
