Franklin Middle School students recently participated in a hands-on salmon dissection as part of the school's Wednesday half-day enrichment and intervention program. These half days are designed to provide targeted academic experiences while also offering engaging enrichment and extension opportunities for students. ๐
"I try to use those Wednesdays to have individuals from various career fields come in and do presentations when possible," says Franklin teacher Jeff McFadden.
For this exciting experience, Franklin welcomed Tiffany Bishop, Executive Director of the Yakima Basin Environmental Education Program (YBEEP), who led a salmon dissection presentation for both student groups. ๐
The dissection of Fall Run Chinook Salmon ๐ , provided through a local hatchery partnership, gave students a unique opportunity to explore anatomy, ecosystems, and real-world environmental science. Planning for the visit began months in advance to align with the hatchery schedule, ensuring students could participate early in the new year. ๐๏ธ
The impact was immediate. Within hours, families reached out to share how excited students were to talk about their experience at home. ๐ฌ The activity sparked curiosity and reinforced Franklin's commitment to meaningful, hands-on learning and career-connected experiences during Wednesday programming. ๐

Franklin Middle School's annual Turkey Bingo event was a tremendous success, bringing together 221 community members for an evening of fun and community support! ๐ซ Through friendly bingo games, every participating family received items they could use to contribute to their Thanksgiving meal. ๐ Some winners took home turkeys or hams as the centerpiece for their holiday tables. ๐
The event went beyond entertainment, offering families valuable resources for the future, including financial literacy sessions ๐ฐ๐ and connections to local support agencies. This combination ensured that attendees left with both items for their holiday celebrations and practical knowledge for financial wellness. ๐ค
The success of Turkey Bingo reflects the strong partnership between Franklin Middle School staff and the broader community. By creating an engaging, welcoming atmosphere, the event addressed real family needs while strengthening the bonds that make our community thrive. ๐
Turkey Bingo shows what is possible when schools think creatively about supporting families. ๐ก Events like these prove that meaningful assistance can come wrapped in celebration, bringing people together while making a real difference in their lives. โค๏ธ
