This spring, Hoover Elementary School launched a new, special support group called Brighter Days Kids Club, and it made a real difference. ☀️
🌟 Brighter Days is a research-backed program run in partnership with ESD 105 and OIC of Yakima, created to help kids build strong life skills and feel more confident as they face everyday challenges.
Students who joined Brighter Days practiced skills such as making good decisions, solving problems, and understanding their own feelings 💡. They also worked on building positive friendships and improving their behaviour in the classroom 🤝. On top of that, the program taught students the importance of avoiding drugs and other harmful substances, and it helped connect them with caring adults who wanted to see them succeed 💪.
At the heart of Brighter Days were five powerful messages that students repeated and believed in. They were:
⭐ "I AM likeable, capable, unique, and valued."
🤲 "I CAN treat others like I want to be treated."
❤️ "I HAVE meaningful relationships and people who care about me."
✅ "I WILL make healthy, responsible decisions."
🌈 "I BELIEVE in my purpose and my future."
These messages are meant to help kids see themselves in a positive light and feel hopeful about what lies ahead 🌅.
🏫 Hoover was proud to help pioneer the program. A big thank you to Mrs. Greenwalt, Mrs. McWain, and Joel Ortega from ESD 105 whose hard work and leadership brought Brighter Days to life for Hoover students 👏.

Supporting Our Kids Starts With Supporting Families!
Did you know that building strong, healthy families is one of the most powerful ways to help children succeed—both in school and in life?
The Yakima County NAACP is hosting a Family Strengthening Workshop designed for 5th grade parents, teachers, and support staff. This workshop focuses on the 5 Protective Factors that help children thrive, including:
✔️ Building resilience in families
✔️ Supporting children’s social-emotional growth
✔️ Strengthening connections and support systems
✔️ Understanding child development
✔️ Accessing help during times of need
This is a great opportunity to gain tools, strategies, and a new perspective on supporting kids—especially those experiencing stress, anxiety, or behavioral challenges.

🏫 As part of the proposed April 28, 2026 bond, Hoover Elementary is identified for replacement.
📊 Hoover has been part of the Yakima community since 1947 and continues to serve students and families today. Originally built for approximately 100–200 students, the school now serves over 600 students.
🛠️ Like many older facilities, the current campus presents some challenges:
• The campus includes more than 15 portable classrooms, creating a spread-out layout that can impact response times across the school
• Limited centralized space makes it difficult to gather as a full school community for events and assemblies
• Some facilities, including the playground, do not fully support accessibility for all students
• Aging infrastructure, such as cracked and uneven pavement, requires ongoing maintenance and can impact day-to-day use
• Smaller shared spaces, like the gym and multi-purpose room, limit capacity for student activities and events
🏗️ The proposed replacement would provide updated learning spaces, improved accessibility, and a more unified campus layout designed to better support students and staff.

🏫 Hoover Elementary has been a meaningful part of our Yakima community since 1947, with generations of students and families walking its halls.
✨ As we look ahead, the proposed bond includes replacing Hoover with a modern learning environment designed to better support today’s students. This would include updated classrooms, dedicated spaces for small-group learning, improved technology systems, and enhanced safety features like a single-point-of-entry.
🔒 The new design would also support student safety, improve campus sightlines, and include energy-efficient heating and cooling.
🌳 Outdoor spaces would be designed to ensure all students can learn and play comfortably.
🛠️ Hoover was identified for replacement nearly 20 years ago. With its last major update in 1975, the building is now well beyond its expected lifespan and continues to present ongoing maintenance challenges.

Hoover Elementary School welcomed over 200 students, families, staff, and community partners on February 25 for Black History Month Family Night. The evening brought the school community together to honor history 📚, uplift culture 🎶, and strengthen a shared commitment to equity and belonging 🤝.
The event created space for meaningful connection and learning 💬, highlighting the importance of recognizing Black history as an integral part of our shared story. Families engaged in conversations, activities, and experiences designed to promote understanding, appreciation, and unity across cultures 🌍. In addition, we recognized Black leaders in our community.
The evening was made possible through strong collaboration with valued community partners, including the Hoover PTO, OIC of Washington, NAACP, Davis High School, Bethel Church, Heritage University Social Work Program, Miz Dee’s BBQ, and additional local organizations committed to supporting students and families. Their partnership reflected the power of community working together to create enriching opportunities for students 💡.
Events like Black History Month Family Night directly align with the Yakima School District’s Strategic Goal #3: to provide equitable opportunity for students to meet or exceed standards, seek solutions, and advocate for racial and social justice ⚖️. By fostering dialogue, celebrating culture 🎉, and building inclusive spaces, Hoover reinforced its commitment to ensuring every student feels seen, valued, supported, and recognized ❤️.
We are proud to partner with families and community organizations to advance educational equity while creating meaningful learning experiences beyond the classroom.
