Tom Meyer, our friend and colleague, passed away on April 30th. Tom was well-loved by both students and teachers; and was known for his great smile and story-telling. Tom taught at Kelloggsville for 35 years, most of which at East Kelloggsville, but also at SW and NW. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Drove by for a couple more pics around 4:45 after they finished for the day. I also added a photo from an early 1980’s yearbook.

The end of an era is near. This is all that remains. I wish I could have stuck around to see it go. All that remains is the left of the entrance and the gym.

The walls of East Kelloggsville are coming down. Tear down began yesterday.

Five years after World War II, the Baby Boomers entered Kindergarten. Kelloggsville was ready for them, having build East and West elementaries, quickly and cheaply. Over the years, both building were expanded, and remodeled for energy-efficiency, technology, and security: three things that were not concerns in 1951.

As the new Central Kelloggsville Elementary has opened up over the past few weeks, East Kelloggsville has been deserted, and will be (sadly) demolished within the next few weeks. Thankfully, Superintendent Sam Wright has allowed former teachers, students & residents to tour the building before it's gone. I went up there yesterday, and had one last look inside and out, with former staff members & students. It was bittersweet.

When East Kelloggsville opened in 1951, Dona Sprik was principal of the Main Elementary on Division Ave. She also became principal of the two new elementary buildings, East & West, for the first year they were open. The following year, Betty Hardy was appointed Principal; actually ½-time Principal and ½-time Kindergarten teacher. To make way for her as Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Strickland was let go. She was my teacher and I loved her. Betty’s husband was on the school board at the time. Do you think that might have been a factor?

This is a view as you go up the stairway to the 2nd floor; very classy!

I kept comparing the new school to the East Building. This is the new, spacious, modern, high-tech office.

Central Kelloggsville Elementary is now open! It's a beautiful and functional building; and our students deserve the best!

World War II ended in 1945; and thousands of young men returned home after 2 or 3 years overseas. Nine months later, the Baby Boom began; and in 1951, the Baby Boomers entered Kindergarten. Kelloggsville was prepared, having quickly built two new elementary buildings: East & West Kelloggsville – in addition to the Main Kelloggsville building (probably known to you as the Junior High)
