The window of opportunity to call a discard closes when one of these five things happens. Pay attention to those discards when and call them when you need them!

What happens when players disagree about a dead hand? 🀄️
The player calling it dead must prove why using the exposures and discards. The other player can concede and stop playing—or contest and continue until the game ends. Then, the two players settle the ruling, and whoever was wrong pays the penalty.
The takeaway: Don’t call a hand dead unless you can prove it!

Dragons causing confusion on the NMJL card? 🐉 Always read the parentheses!

The colors show one possible example, but the parentheses tell you how the hand can actually be played. When in doubt, read the fine print! 🀄️

When is it too late to call the previous discard? Reaching toward the wall is okay—but once you touch and move the next tile, you’re committed to it. Pause, check the discard, then pick! 🀄️

Have you ever seen someone stand a claimed discard upright in front of their rack? It’s a house rule that some groups use to help identify discards. The more you play the less you’ll rely on it!

When you call a tile, remember you can put the called discard on your rack first or you can put the tiles from your rack up first.

Remember don’t look at your tiles until everyone has theirs. This is not a rule, but an official recommendation from NMJL. Mah Jongg Made Easy says We recommend that each player picks their own tiles and that these tiles be left in stacks as shown above until all tiles are picked.

The safest way to do a joker exchange. Always announce it! Remember tournament rules can vary.
