FMS is a two-room schoolhouse located in the rural town of Worton, Maryland. Tucked away between farms, our school offers a peaceful, safe, nature-filled environment for the children to explore. A Montessori teacher and her college professor husband, who wanted their own young sons’ first school to be Montessori, founded FMS in 1992. It is an independent early childhood program enrolling children ages 2-6.

Word problems are about figuring out how to figure them out. Every question involves the child who is doing the work and their school. “In Pre-Primary, there are 12 students. How many eyes do the students have all together? How many eyes if we include their teachers?” “You and your Mom are reading a great book about hiking in the Amazon. You read a page, then Mom reads a page. If the book is 46 pages long, how many pages will you read? How many pages will your Mom read?”

The Teen Bead Rack. Ten plus 1 is 11. Ten plus 2 is 12. The bead bars are color coded; the golden one will always be 10, the light blue always five, etc. The beads are pretty, easy to count, fun to hang on the hook, and they make the abstract notion of numbers more concrete.

Exploration of a carpenter bee. This kindergartner enjoyed moving the bee under the microscope to get a clearer view of the wings, legs, head, and fuzzy body. He could not find a stinger. Had it fallen off? Could it be curled up inside its mouth? We checked, and found male carpenter bees do not develop stingers, only the females have them. And that information led to a bunch of additional questions and hypotheses.

The Continent Map is introduced after the continent globe, which shows the land and water in the same colors as the map. The child carefully moves the pieces one at a time from the wooden board to the control map, and then back again once completed.
Another day, she can choose a puzzle map of any one of the continents, or a map of the United States. These maps are very challenging and require focus.

Using a photograph for reference, this 3-year-old arranged the Broad Stair with the Pink Tower, moving from largest to smallest. The floor mat defines her space. The friends have learned to walk around their classmates’ mats so as not to disrupt their work.
This child has also built tall buildings, cruise ships, and playgrounds with these sensorial materials. As long as they are handled with care, she is welcome to explore the materials as much as she likes.
