The World Cup is expected to bring billions in economic activity to the U.S.—but will it actually boost local economies the way FIFA predicts? ⚽
Professor Victor Matheson, a nationally recognized sports economist and expert on mega-sporting events, tells ABC News the impact may be more “mixed” than it looks.
“Some money that gets spent in these cities doesn’t stick,” Matheson said. “Money spent on World Cup tickets goes directly into the pocket of FIFA.”

We’re excited to welcome five incredible local artists as part of the HC x WCC 2026 Creative Residencies at the Prior Performing Arts Center. 💜
Local artists Ava D’Eon, Jean-Sebastien Duvilaire (with JSSDance), Cesar Rodrigues, Samuel Sjostedt and Isiah Tucker (with Inner Voice Outer Change) have been selected for HCxWCC's 2026 summer creative residencies at the Prior Performing Arts Center at the College of the Holy Cross through its Scholarship in Action at Holy Cross program, the final year of a three-year partnership between the College, the city's Cultural Development Division, and the Worcester Cultural Coalition. Stay tuned this summer for updates on the exciting work being done by these artists-in-residence!
