is a growing social justice movement that addresses the jailing of poor—and often Black and Brown—people who cannot afford to post bail while awaiting trial. While held in jail, they risk losing their jobs, housing, and custody of their children without ever first being convicted of a crime.
Join us Tuesday, July 14 to learn about bail reform from Malik Neal '13, director of the Philadelphia Bail Fund. Our conversation with Malik is the first of three Zoom webinars featuring Holy Cross alumni who are working to dismantle structural racism in their communities.
A Conversation with Holy Cross Alumni: Dismantling Structural Racism, July 14, 21, 28 | 4-5 p.m.
Conversations with Alumni: Dismantling Structural Racism
July 14 / 4 pm: Malik Neal '13, Director, Philadelphia Bail Fund
Malik Neal, '13
Malik Neal '13 is a founding member and director of the Philadelphia Bail Fund, a nonprofit organization that posts bail for those who cannot afford to pay and that advocates for reform. He’ll explain why the cash bail system is unfair and criminalizes poverty, how people of color are disproportionately penalized, and ways students can get involved.
Malik will be joined by Dante Jones, a North Philly resident who was detained pretrial in Philadelphia’s jails, convicted of no crime other than an inability to pay for his freedom.

Cannot wait to see everyone tonight on the Hoval!
Our last alum highlight is a special one since for this alum it is not only her 5th year reunion, but also her graduation from medical school this weekend! Meghan Reynolds graduated from HC with a degree in Mathematics. After graduation, Meghan worked in Newton, MA teaching high school math. However, she couldn’t stay away from Worcester for long and returned a year later to attend medical school at UMass. She will be starting her pediatric residency at Dartmouth mid-June. Meghan’s favorite memories of her time on the Hill include the Mac&Cheese in lower Kimball and playing on the women’s ice hockey team. She is excited that her last weekend in Worcester is our reunion weekend and looks forward to going back to campus and enjoying a meal in Kimball again.

This morning we will highlight Emma Colbert. She majored in Mathematics while at HC and graduated as part of the College Honors Program. After graduation, she attended UConn where she earned her Masters of Science in Mathematics. She became licensed to teach math in Massachusetts, and is currently working at Westwood High School. Emma’s favorite memories of her time at HC include singing with the Delilahs, sledding, and living in Figge during senior year. She is looking forward to our reunion for seeing friends again and getting an iced chai from Cool Beans.

Three days left! Tonight we will highlight Katie Bailey (Guandalini). She majored in English from HC. While at the Cross, she had the opportunity to study abroad in England which led her to return there post-graduation to get her Masters in English from Durham University. While she was abroad her junior year, she met a British gentleman whom she just married last summer. They now live in New Jersey where she works as a high school English teacher. Katie’s favorite memory of her time at HC was during the Nemo “lock-down” when she and her friends had a pajama party and did not have to do anything productive. She is looking forward to reliving good memories during our reunion and catching up with old friends.

Today we will highlight Sammie Ziegler. Sammie graduated from HC as a Biology major with a concentration in Biochemistry. Since graduation, she has been getting her PhD in Biochemistry at Yale. She works in a lab that studies HIV at the molecular level and is the social media chair for a STEM outreach group. Sammie’s favorite memories of HC are when she and her roommates (affectionately dubbed Superquad) would go to ICraze for froyo and when she would blast AC/DC in the lab to rock out with her experiments.

One week left until reunion! Please consider making a gift if you haven't already.
Today we will recognize Andrew Baccari. Andrew majored in Religious Studies while at HC. He was accepted to Harvard Divinity School where he earned his MDiv in 2016. Andrew has continued to pursue his passion for education and helping others and is currently attending UMass Medical School. Andrew’s favorite memories of his time on the hill include spending time with friends during Spring Weekend at the end of each academic year and also receiving a singing Valentine from the Delilah’s at Kimball Dining Hall where Stephanie Montilla (‘13) sang Beyonce’s “End of Time.” Andrew is thankful for the professors at Holy Cross who made his college experience a meaningful one. He looks forward to visiting the campus for reunion and attending the reunion dinner with his fellow alum.

Just 2 weeks until we are reunited on the Hill!
Today we will highlight Sarah Sordo Vieira (Orchard). She majored in Mathematics while at HC. Since graduation, she earned her Masters in Mathematics with a concentration in Linear Algebra from the University of Kentucky. She and her husband recently returned to New England where she works for VASCOR logistics as a business intelligence analyst. In this role, she acts as a liaison between the operational and IT departments to portray data in a meaningful manner. She also teaches grades 5-8 at the Russian School of Mathematics. Sarah’s favorite memory of HC is whenever there was a snow storm and her friends and her would get to go sledding.

Less than a month until reunion!! We are all so excited to see everyone back on the hill. Don't forget to make a gift if you haven't already!
This week, we will highlight Liz Thorpe (Carter). Liz majored in Psychology while at HC. Since graduation, she earned her Masters in Counseling from Assumption College with a concentration in Cognitive Behavioral Therapies. Currently, she and her husband live in Manchester, NH where she works as a Child and Family Therapist for Riverbend Community Mental Health in the Children’s Intervention Program. She provides therapy to children and adolescents, including those who have experienced domestic violence or child maltreatment. Liz is most excited to see friends at our 5th year reunion and to spend time on our beautiful campus!

This week we will highlight Kelsey Russell. She graduated from HC with a degree in English and a concentration in Women’s and Gender Studies. After college, she attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School as a Dean’s Scholar. While there, she worked as an Executive Editor on the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, and was published in the 165th Volume for her work, Cruel and Unusual Construction: The Eighth Amendment as a Limit on Building Prisons on Toxic Waste Sites. Kelsey graduated law school last year and has been clerking for the Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of N.Y. Kelsey is very thankful to all of her professors, peers, and the entire HC community for preparing her for her (still very young) career in law. It comes as no surprise that mock trial remains one of her favorite memories from her time on the Hill. She says that while the team went undefeated at the 2013 Boston Regionals, the wins were not what made the experience so special--it was Jim and Ed's quotes, Pete's golf swing, Caiti's Jordan James, Theresa's stone cold crosses, and Alex's impassioned openings. It was the friends she made and the memories she'll cherish forever.
