For this collaborative endeavor to be effective, a sincere concern for our own welfare and the consideration we have for the rights of others is paramount.

The Worcester Polytechnic Institute Police Department (WPI) was awarded re-accreditation with the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission (MPAC) on February 17, 2026.
Accreditation is a self-initiated evaluation process by which police departments strive to meet and maintain standards that have been established for the profession.
On November 18, 2025, WPI Police underwent its 3rd re-assessment, having achieved initial Certification in 2015, initial Accreditation in 2017, and re-accredited in 2020 and 2023. These carefully selected standards reflect critical areas of police management, operations, and technical support activities. They cover important areas such as policy development, emergency response planning, training, communications, property and evidence management, use of force, internal affairs, vehicular pursuit, prisoner transport, criminal investigations, background investigations, and many other important topics. The program not only sets standards for the law enforcement profession, but also for the delivery of police services to the WPI community and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
WPI Police are among 27 colleges and universities that participate in the Accreditation program. To achieve Accreditation, the department has to meet 394 standards.
Thank you to Chief Stephen Marsh, Accreditation Manager Captain Brendan Green, and the command staff for their continued leadership and support to continue maintaining the “GOLD” standard in policing.

Department Recognition
Congratulations to Detective Sergeant William Murdock for receiving the Administrative Initiative award to Combat Crime, Improve Efficiency or Significantly Improve Public Safety by Development of an Innovative Program. The award ceremony was hosted at Framingham State University by the Massachusetts Association of Colleges and University Administrators (MACLEA).
Nomination for the award was submitted by Captain Brendan Green.
William Murdock has been assigned the role of Detective since July 2017. He was promoted to Detective Sergeant in January 2024, acting as a patrol supervisor and maintaining his role as the department's Detective. He has been at the forefront of all WPI Police Department criminal investigations, whether it was initiated or required follow-up. He has streamlined departmental operations for criminal investigations, acting as the lead primary investigator, aggressively following up on all leads. He has acted as the primary liaison for the department for all criminal investigations, working with Federal, State, and local law enforcement across the commonwealth. Detective Sergeant Murdock continues to exceed the standard of professionalism. His dedication and service to the department are beyond the call of duty.
Because of Detective Sergeant Murdock's aggressive investigative response to a serious incident, his high level of commitment to the mission of the department, and his dedication and commitment to training and preparing others for responding to incidents that could be life-threatening, the department nominated him for the above award.
