The celebration of the 250th anniversary of America continues with an an exhibit of rare books pertaining to the American Revolution, on view in Archives and Distinctive Collections. The display includes imprints from 1776, early histories of the War of Independence, an “American archives” commissioned by Congress and more.

On this day in …

Holy Cross students gave a command performance as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of American independence. Students first performed an outdoor production of Hecuba, the tragic play by Euripides, on May 30, 1926. It was given in the original Greek and held on Fitton Field. The high quality production, with its elaborate sets, garnered widespread attention, including numerous articles in the New York Times and an invitation to perform at the Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia September 15-16 of that year. Sadly, many of the large sets were later destroyed by a fire in Fenwick Hall.

Give three cheers and a hoiah when you visit the Archives & Distinctive Collections exhibit of items that celebrate the 250th anniversary of America, the centennial of a notable performance, the marching band, football and other athletics. Photographs, documents, and more will be on display in the Reading Room.

Staff will be available to answer questions.

When students arrived back on the Hill in the fall of 1957, four members of the same family were on campus at the same time. There was a Downs brother in every class year. It was noteworthy enough to be reported in The Crusader (September 26, 1957, p, 2). The article also mentioned that the string would be broken at graduation, because the next Downs sibling to enter college was a sister, and women would not be admitted to Holy Cross until 1972.

Archives and Distinctive Collections presents The Healy Brothers on the Hill, an exhibit on view in Dinand Library’s Main Reading Room until November 20, 2026. Among the College’s first students, James, Hugh, Patrick, Sherwood and Michael Healy were born enslaved under Georgia law but were sent North for their education. This exhibit explores the Healy brothers’ experiences on the Hill through archival photographs, diaries, sheet music, and other documents from the College’s Archives and Distinctive Collections.
