Starting in 2019, the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) has been honoring the 'pillars' of orthopaedic surgery who have "advanced the profession through dedication and leadership." This year, Dr. Arthur M. Pappas was awarded this honor. Dr. Pappas was the founding chairman of the UMass Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and served as the medical director for the Boston Red Sox from 1978-2003. Dr. Pappas was instrumental in the development of the UMass academic healthcare system and served as a guiding role model for a large network of orthopaedic residents and fellows throughout his 40 year career.
