WPI has been awarded $1.5 million in federal funding to advance a promising technology that destroys harmful per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as “forever chemicals.”

Chemical Engineering Professor Michael Timko is leading work to destroy PFAS chemicals.

New federal funding will help his research team advance a technology they’ve developed at WPI. The goal is to give communities a solution to eliminate “forever chemicals” from contaminated soil and from firefighting foam. Congressman James McGovern announced the award during a visit to the university’s laboratories.

WPI students, Coulter Ralston '21 and Amanda Lowther '21 met during their sophomore year and built a relationship that continued long after graduation.

Wanting to honor the place where their story began, Coulter purchased a commemorative brick on campus. He then incorporated the brick into a surprise proposal, creating a meaningful connection between their past at WPI and their future together.

We're thrilled to share that Amanda said yes. 💍

Congratulations to the happy couple, and thank you for letting WPI be part of such a special moment in your journey.

It's go time! Yesterday afternoon following Convocation, a special, student-only event, the Class of 2026 crossed Earle Bridge.

Graduate Commencement takes place Thursday, and Undergraduate Commencement is Friday.

A pioneering WPI faculty member, Helen Vassallo MBA '82 was also a clinical biologist, mother to 10 children, two-time author, American Businesswoman of the Year, helicopter pilot, patent holder, and recipient of the Key to the City of Worcester.

"My mom blazed many trails in her lifetime but never sought the limelight. Instead, her focus was always attuned to service,” said Steve Vassallo '93 of his mother.

It is in this spirit of generosity, impact, and service that Steve and his wife Trae established the Dr. Helen G. Vassallo Distinguished Presidential Professorship. It's a meaningful way to honor Helen's life and career—and to cement her legacy.
