In January 2020, the Sokimi family welcomed quadruplets – the first in American Samoa’s history – to their already large family for a total of eleven children! This family, like the island itself and the LBJ Tropical Medical Center, holds a special place in our hearts, especially since our former students were on clinical rotations at the time and were there to help deliver the babies. We have continued this relationship through the years and now with the Assumption University PA Program.

Sadly, in March of 2025, Sokimi Sokimi, father to eleven children and husband to their mom, Filomena Sokimi, passed away suddenly. The Assumption University PA Student Society has raised funds for the Sokimi family during this sad, difficult time, and our first group of students was able to meet the family in person this week. After enjoying dinner provided by our hosts, we spent the rest of the evening meeting (and playing volleyball with) more family and neighbors!

Meet the "First Round Draft Picks" - our very first group of Assumption University PA students to travel to American Samoa where they will spend the next 10 weeks completing two clinical rotations at the LBJ Tropical Medical Center! We are honored and excited to return to the island where our students will have so many opportunities to see patients under the guidance of excellent physicians and other healthcare professionals. They are already making connections and friendships outside the hospital as well - stay tuned for more updates! Program Director Chris Ferreira, PA-C is on the island and in the hospital with this group and has been showing them what American Samoa has to offer... on their downtime, of course!
