Congratulations to our RELS major, Kevin Poe, winner of the Undergraduate Research Prize!

Kevin Poe is a junior (class of 2023), from Canton OH. He is a double major in Philosophy and Religious Studies, and a minor in South Asian Studies. He participated in an off-campus study program in Thailand during Fall 2021, where he studied Buddhism
and did research for the paper presented at the 2022 Midwest regional conference of the American Academy of Religion. His Midwest AAR paper was titled “Morality is a Story: The Lived Relationship Between Narrative and Ethics for Theravada Buddhist Monks.” He presented the paper at the Midwest AAR conference, March 3-5 (hosted by Missouri State University).

Kevin’s paper earned the Undergraduate Research prize, for the
outstanding undergraduate paper presented at this year’s conference.

Dr. Graham introduces the wide range of canons, collections, and varieties of scriptures and authoritative texts in Buddhist traditions and addresses the question of what constitutes an authoritative text in Buddhist traditions of practice.

You are cordially invited to the second lecture in the Academy of Religion series TONIGHT at 7:30pm in Bruch Hall of First Presbyterian Church - Wooster, OH:

PROF. Jeremy Rapport, "AMERICA'S ALTERNATIVE BIBLES"

Creativity is a hallmark of religious life, especially in the United States. In this lecture, Dr. Rapport examines several "new scriptures" created by alternative religious communities in the US. He argues that the process of creating new scriptures, as illustrated in works such as the Book of Mormon, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, and the Urantia Book, illustrates how American alternative religions developed around critical Protestant notions about the role of texts in religious life.

The Religious Studies Department invites you to the 52nd Annual Fall Academy of Religion Lecture series, which begins TONIGHT at 7:30pm and runs through mid-October. Each Wednesday at 7:30pm in Bruch Hall First Presbyterian Church - Wooster, OH(621 College Ave.), a member of our RELS faculty will offer a presentation on a topic connected to this year’s theme. Students and community members are invited—Masking and social distancing are strongly encouraged for the duration of the event.

This year's theme, “What is Scripture?”, will take a cross-cultural examination of different religious texts and traditions, exploring how they impact our worldviews, identities, and cultures.

Tonight Dr. Jeremy Rapport in his talk titled "What is Scripture?" will look at the concept of scripture, how it is defined and understood, as well as some of the issues with using scripture as a universal concept. This lecture will also briefly overview major scriptural traditions.
