Ok young people…it is time for you to have “conversations”. That means you talk to someone and someone else talks back, you have eye contact and respond to what was said to you or you think of something to say to another. This while you look down at your phone is not working. Be confident! Know you have information to share! You have ideas…you have positive energy.
For start…respond when someone speaks to you. an “hello” how are things going for you is a beginning.

When running into an old friend, please, state your full name before you start a greeting. It is embarrassing to have someone greet you with kindness and affection and have no idea who they are.
A name will bring back the memory…hopefully. It is especially kind for older folks. “Jane, Hi, it’s Cathie Webster. I am so happy to see you” for instance.

Friends, let’s step back a minute and think about what is truly important.
Courtesy Matters says kindness. Please, treat others with kindness. Being angry serves no purpose. It only makes others angrier with you when you lash out. Our opinions are important but express them with KINDNESS.

A request regarding R.S.V.P. has been made. It is the abbreviation of the French phrase “respndez s’il vous plait”. It means please respond. It lets the host or hostess know how many guests to expect.
Please reply, or the favor of a reply also means respond.
Regrets only means you are expected to reply only if you cannot attend the function. Upon receipt of an invitation one knows whether or not he/she is free so respond in a timely manner.

This is a repeated Courtesy Matters tip but one worth writing.
Graduations, weddings, and birthdays all bring gifts. When you receive one a thank you note should be written within a week. Please choose an appropriate note card then on with the message.
The date belongs in the upper right hand corner, next is a salutation (Dear Eversonice). Just three lines and you are finished. Name the gift, how you will use it and your appreciation. Thank you is only said one time. Don’t apologize for tardiness the one receiving the note knows if it’s late.
End with an appropriate closing…love, with appreciation, best to you…and your name. See how easy it is?
I don’t really want to address a text message or email but if that is all you can do, it is better than nothing.

Today let us think about our cell phones. When you attend a meeting your phone should be turned off or on mute. It is RUDE to check or send emails or messages while you are listening to a speaker…don’t consider it multi-tasking because it is not. Whether it is a large community meeting or a small more personal one please, please, please put the speaker’s message above your own “importance”. If you receive an emergency contact, leave the meeting as to not distract others.

When our granddaughter was graduated from Hudson High School the announcer cautioned families to hold applause so every family could hear their child’s name. I guess a family sitting in the auditorium thought the comment didn’t mean them. Our granddaughter’s name was drowned out with screams and screeches which were ..forgive me…tacky. Our granddaughter who was graduated with honors deserved to have her name heard. So please hold your applause and congratulate your child appropriatly. Forgive me Hudson, it was college!

Today I had friends suggest that I pick up the pace with suggestions for nice interpersonal behavior.
One of the suggestions was to remind men and boys when to remove baseball hats. Using proper etiquette a hat is removed when a gentleman enters a building. A hat is definitely removed when the Star Spangled Banner is played. When a man or boy sits down to a meal his hat is removed.
Removing ones hat during introductions is also courteous…and both men and women stand for the handshake.
