KET is proud to celebrate Josh Renaud and Lauren Viera, recent graduates from Rhode Island Regional Adult Learning! Congratulations!
FastForward was the perfect self-paced GED Testing Service preparation for Josh Renaud of Rhode Island to gain confidence as he studied for the exam with his personalized learning plan. He passed in February 2021 and now enrolled at the Community College of Rhode Island where he plans to study business administration with a concentration in management! KET's FastForward is a perfect option for learners like Josh, a high-school stop-out: someone who temporarily withdraws from enrollment. As a young person, Josh experienced challenges that caused him to leave high school prior to graduation. When he was ready to move forward in his education and career, he benefited from a chance to move quickly with good tools and support.

Please join KET in congratulating Josh Renaud, Lynn Foley, Rhode Island Regional Adult Learning and Rhode Island PBS. We are so proud of Josh and everyone who brought the opportunity to use FastForward to help him reach his goals. See his story:

As the weather cools down, it's great to curl up with a good book, especially as a family.

November is National Family Literacy Month. As such, we will be sharing resources in the next few weeks which will encourage parents, grandparents, and children to read and write together. But, for today, we are proud to share some of our partners who are doing amazing work to ensure that every family can curl up with a good book together.

Rhode Island Regional Adult Learning, right here in Woonsocket, provides ESL and Basic Education classes to help parents improve their reading and writing skills. These classes teach students about increasingly important digital literacy as well. Interested? Visit http://www.riral.org/find-a-class to learn more or sign up.

Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island works with Providence and Central Falls schools to provide free family literacy courses for the parents and caregivers of those students. Participants not only work to improve their English literacy skills, but also learn how to actively engage in their child’s education. Due to current events, these courses have moved online. Visit https://diiri.org/family-literacy/ to learn more or register.

The Providence Public Library is also doing wonderful work in this field with their RI Family Literacy Initiative. The PPL is offering a variety of online literacy courses for all levels and schedules. They also provide fun family literacy bags for babies and toddlers which includes books, activity cards, a journal, multilingual resources for parents, and more. To learn more about the classes and bags, visit https://www.provlib.org/education/adults/ri-family-literacy-initiative/ and https://www.provlib.org/education/discovery-library/for-parents-educators/family-literacy-bags/, respectively.

Meet Xiao, a learner at this week’s Adult Education spotlight partner, ! Her journey at RIRAL began in 2015 when she enrolled in ESL classes. After discussing future goals, Xiao realized that if she wanted more than a job, she needed to earn a high school diploma and go to college. The program staff at RIRAL not only helped her overcome her self doubt, they also encouraged Xiao to study for and earn her GED and eventually enroll in RIRAL’s Transition to College program with CCRI. In May 2022, Xiao will finish her Associate’s degree and begin her career as a Medical Laboratory Technician! Congrats to you Xiao!!
