We have noticed that we have had several new followers lately and we wanted share what we do and answer any questions you may have
What is OTF?
OTF is a free tutoring program that matches high school elite students with student athletes who need a little extra help with academics.
Who are our Tutors?
OTF Tutors are students from River Ridge High School who are members of academic clubs such as National Honor Society and Beta Club. Our Tutors all have high grade point averages and are very skilled at the subjects that they teach. Our Tutors from past school years include several top ten students of their class and this year's valedictorian. Our Tutors have been accepted to top colleges and Universities such as Emory, University of Georgia, and Clemson, among many others. Some of our Tutors have been recognized at the county, state, and national levels for PSAT and SAT scores and for service achievements.
How do I sign up my student Athlete for OTF?
We have a sign up genius where you can sign your student athlete up for sessions. You can sign up for each session or selected sessions if your child has a project, test or is just struggling with a certain concept. The sign up genius will open at the beginning of the school year. It will be shared on this page and through team mom's from Jr Knights sports teams.
How does OTF match Tutors with student athletes?
When you sign up your child on the sign up genius there is a google form link at the top in the introduction. We ask that you fill this out each time your child is signed up for a session. It will ask what subject or concept your child needs help with. We also have a form for our Tutors to fill out. The Tutors indicate on this form their strengths and weaknesses concerning subjects and what they feel most comfortable teaching. We use all of this information to match the student athlete with the perfect tutor for what they need.
Are Tutors prepared for their particular student and subject
ahead of time?
Yes! We use the google form that you fill out to create a form for each tutor for every session. The tutor knows the child they are tutoring and what they need help with and any special accommodations needed. This is emailed to each tutor before each session to allow them to prepare for the lesson.
Does OTF provide school supplies and school computers?
Yes! We have access to school computers so that the Tutors and student athletes can access Canvas and any study tools they may need. We also provide pencils, paper, graph paper, and art supplies. If something specific is needed for something your child is working on it is reccomended that they bring it to be sure it can be completed. We also use white boards in media center and classrooms when needed to help with math based sessions. The tutor and student athlete can work out problems on the board together.
Who supervises OTF Sessions?
We have a volunteer staff of four adults. There are always at least two adults at each session to supervise and keep everyone on track.
Who can sign up for OTF?
OTF was designed for middle school student athletes in Jr Knights programs. As we have grown we have also helped high school students and elementary students as well. If you have a child who needs help that is not in a Jr Knight program please reach out to us and we will do our best to accommodate.
Is OTF only during football season?
No! We have sessions throughout the entire school year. We have sessions every week when school is in session except for the week before week long breaks.
When and where is OTF?
We meet on Thursdays from 530-630 in the River Ridge Media Center. You drop your child off and pick your child up at the bus lanes behind the school.
What if my child has jr knight practice after OTF?
Jr Knight Football players have practice on Thursday nights at 630. These players can be dropped off at OTF and coaches will take them to practice after the session. Parents can pick them up after practice as usual. Be sure your athlete brings everything they will need for practice. We can offer this service for other Jr knight sports as well. This can be indicated on the google form you fill out. In the off season and for other student athletes who dont have practice, parents can pick up their child at 630 in the bus lanes.
Does OTF require each student athlete to have a tutor?
No! Sometimes our student athletes just need a quiet place to do homework away from distractions at home. We have a designated area for these athletes to sit and work. They will not have a tutor but if they get stuck or have a question about a concept they can let us know and a tutor will help. This option can be indicated on the google form.
Why does OTF work?
By pairing the student athletes with Tutors who are familiar with the ways students are taught certain concepts is valuable. As parents, we may have been taught different ways of doing things such as math problems and ELA concepts. Our program is a great way to bridge these gaps. Also, many of our Tutors are student athletes themselves. This allows them to connect with their students in a way that adults cannot. Our Tutors are great mentors as well. Our student athletes really connect with their tutors and many are requested each week and form bonds with them.
Can you provide any special accommodations that my student may need.
Yes. There is a section on the google form that you can indicate and special accommodations your student may need. This includes but not limited to: wearing headphones while doing homework, being separated with their tutor away from distractions and ADHD breaks.
Can my student athlete bring snacks or meals to OTF to eat especially if they are going to practice afterward?
Yes! You can send food with your child to eat during a session. OTF does provide snacks such as chips, crackers and other snacks foods. Your child is encouraged to bring a water bottle to each session. We do not provide drinks.
How much does OTF cost?
Absolutely nothing! OTF is a pure voluntary program. Our adult staff are volunteers and our Tutors earn volunteer credits for any clubs or academic organizations they are involved in. We do have many Tutors who continue volunteering after their credits are earned and several who volunteer who do not need credits. Our Tutors really enjoy helping our student athletes.
What subjects do you offer for tutoring?
Anything and everything! We have spanish and ASL Tutors, Tutors who excel in math and sciences, healthcare classes, and some who can help with computer technology. It is very important that the Google forms are filled out especially if your child needs help with a language or special subject so we can make sure we have a tutor in that subject.
If you have any other questions please feel free to ask! You can message this page or email at [email protected].
We look forward to seeing your student athlete at OTF in the fall.
Have a fun and safe summer!
