Outdoor YMCA Friday at CORE: A Closer Look at Mushrooms! 🍄

Our Outdoor Education students continued their mushroom unit today with a lot of hands-on learning about the fascinating world of fungi. They explored how fungi are used in food and medicine, help break down organic matter, and connect with trees. Students got up and moving with “Fungus or Not Fungi?” and other games that brought those ideas to life. 🍄🌲

One group also started the day volunteering with the Foundation for Hospital Art, putting creativity and service into action. 🎨💛

The day wrapped up with student choice time, including fishing, art, board games, herpetology, hiking, skating and biking, and karaoke.

It was another Friday full of hands-on learning, exploring, giving back, and having fun. 🧡

Science in action! 🍦🔬

Our middle school scientists made homemade ice cream while investigating the states of matter and the role temperature plays in changing matter from a liquid to a solid.

Students got to apply what they’ve been learning by observing the changes firsthand, making predictions, experimenting, and seeing the science behind the process as their ingredients transformed into ice cream.

Hands-on science is even better when you get to eat the experiment! 🍨

Our next Coffee with the Counselors will be tomorrow, September 16th, from 9:00-10:00am in the CORE Science Lab!

Coffee with the Counselors is a monthly meeting where the CORE families and counselors can come together to support each other, explore a designated topic, and provide resources. This month, we will be discussing “Navigating the Teen Years.” Don’t forget to RSVP via the Google Form emailed to you!

Friday Outdoor Education: Exploring Fungi

Our second Outdoor Education unit of the school year kicked off this Friday at the YMCA as we explored mushrooms! 🍄

Students learned that the mushroom we see above ground is actually just one part of a much larger organism. They explored the role of mycelium, learned how fungi help decompose and recycle nutrients, and discovered some of the ways fungi interact with plants and animals. They then put their learning into action with a mushroom-inspired Red Light, Green Light game and a Mushroom vs. Animal capture-the-flag challenge.

After the lesson, students chose how they wanted to reflect on their learning through activities like Art, Movement, Writing, Trivia/Games, or Impact. This gave students different ways to process and connect with what they had just learned.

We finished the afternoon with some choice time that included activities like archery, art, pickleball, and more.

Another great Friday of Outdoor Education at the YMCA—learning something new, getting outside, and spending time together as a community!

🏈 Flag football is in full swing at CORE!

We love watching our students get out on the field, learn new skills, work together, and compete. Being part of a team gives students the chance to build confidence, make friends, challenge themselves, and have fun. For many students, CORE is where they try a sport for the first time and discover a new passion!

Our flag football players have been putting in the work, and we’re so proud of their effort, teamwork, and growth this season.

Today, CORE students visited Reinhardt University for an exciting day of exploring what could be next!

Our group included students who are beginning to explore different colleges, as well as students who have a specific interest in Reinhardt. Students participated in an information session, toured campus, asked questions, and got a firsthand look at college life. And a huge thank-you to the Reinhardt team for welcoming our students and generously providing lunch! 💙

At CORE, we intentionally work with our students to help them discover their interests, identify their strengths, and figure out what their next steps after high school might look like—whether that means college, a career, vocational training, or another path that is right for them.

Today was one of those opportunities to explore, ask questions, and start imagining what comes next. We’re excited for more college visits and future-focused experiences throughout the year!

Student-Led Conferences are an opportunity for our students to start the school year with intention. Students reflect on where they are, think about where they want to go, and set goals for the year ahead.

By putting students in the driver’s seat from the beginning, we’re helping them take ownership of their learning, build confidence, and create a vision for their year at CORE. Parents, check your email and make sure you sign-up!

💚Funky Fridays at the Y🧡

Every fourth Friday, we are switching things up at the YMCA!

The day kicked off with a team-building challenge before students slowed down for a dedicated mindfulness hour filled with yoga, journaling, and a mindfulness hike.

After that, students jumped into their student-run clubs, including D&D, Asian Languages, and Astronomy. We wrapped up the day with some CORE favorites: fishing, art, trivia, Gaga Ball, and more!

We are loving our new Outdoor Education Friday setup! 🧘🎲🎨⚽️
