“Isn’t that just bribing your kid?” We get it. From the outside they look similar. The difference is WHEN and WHY. Reinforcement is planned and comes after the skill. Bribery is improvised mid-meltdown to make it stop. One builds behavior; the other builds louder meltdowns. Save this for the next family BBQ debate.

The study behind today’s video: researchers at Birkbeck used eye-tracking to watch how nine-month-old infants searched for a target hidden among distractors. The babies who found it fastest showed more autistic traits at 15 months and at two years.

Two things worth being precise about, because this gets misreported constantly.

First, this was research on infants with an older autistic sibling, a group with an elevated likelihood of autism. It is not a screening test you can run at home, and it does not diagnose anything. It is a window into how early perceptual differences show up in development.

Second, and more importantly: the finding is that these babies were BETTER at something. Faster. More accurate. The earliest measurable sign was a strength, not a deficit. That reframes the entire conversation about what autism is and when it starts.

Long before your kid could tell you what they saw, their brain was already seeing more than yours.
