Please join us in congratulating Woodlyn Academy teacher Katrina Strand for being named a Terry Lynn Lokoff Teacher of the Year Award winner presented by First Up. Out of more than 300 nominations, Katrina was selected as one of just 15 educators across the region to receive this prestigious recognition.

The award is named in honor of Terri Lynne Lokoff, a passionate early childhood advocate whose legacy continues through the Terri Lynne Lokoff Child Care Foundation. The foundation works to elevate the early childhood profession by recognizing outstanding educators who demonstrate exceptional dedication, leadership, and impact in the lives of young children. Being selected for this award places Katrina among some of the most respected early childhood professionals in the region and highlights the critical importance of high quality early learning.

Katrina has been a dedicated member of the Woodlyn Academy family since 2018, and throughout her tenure she has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to excellence in early childhood education. Her classroom reflects the patience, intentional instruction, and nurturing care that help young children build confidence, independence, and a lifelong love for learning.

While continuing her work with our students, Katrina recently earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education and obtained her Montessori Teacher Certification, further strengthening the high quality instruction she brings to the classroom each day. Her dedication to professional growth is a powerful example of what it means to be a lifelong learner and an educator who truly invests in her craft.

This recognition is not only a testament to Katrina’s talent and heart for children, but also a reflection of the standard of excellence we strive for across the Woodlyn Academy Organization. Educators like Katrina help bring our mission to life every day by providing the kind of high quality early education that changes life trajectories.

This morning one of our students spent several minutes carefully working with the Montessori cylinder k***s.

At first glance it might look like a simple activity. Small wooden cylinders being lifted out and placed back into a block. But to the child, it is a puzzle, a challenge, and an opportunity to think.

One by one the cylinders were removed. Some were taller. Some were wider. Some were smaller than the others. The student studied each one, compared them, and slowly began placing them back where they belonged. When one did not fit, there was no frustration. Just curiosity. A pause. Another try.
This is the beauty of Montessori materials. They allow children to explore, make decisions, and correct their own mistakes. Along the way they are strengthening fine motor skills, developing visual discrimination, building concentration, and learning how to persist through a challenge.

Moments like this may seem small, but they are laying the foundation for reading, writing, problem solving, and independent thinking.

At Woodlyn Academy and Penrose Academy we believe every child deserves access to high quality learning experiences that build confidence and curiosity from the very beginning. When children are given the right tools and the right environment, they show us just how capable they truly are.

And it often starts with something as simple as a set of wooden cylinders.

🦸🏾‍♂️✨ Superhero Training in Full Effect! ✨🦸🏽‍♀️
At Woodlyn Academy and Penrose Academy, our campers are discovering that real heroes aren’t just in comic books— they’re everyday people who choose to make the world better! 🌍💪

This week, our little heroes-in-training took on Madam Taussads in The Big Apple 🍎 where they met their favorite superheroes (in wax form 😉) and wrapped up the day with a magical lunch in Central Park.

The lesson? Dream BIG… and do even BIGGER! 🚀

This Teacher Appreciation Week, we honor the real superheroes among us.

Teachers can never be thanked enough, paid enough, or rewarded enough for the sacrifices they make daily. They show up—mind, body, and heart—to shape young minds, calm storms, spark curiosity, and pour into children and families with a kind of love and patience that defies words.

But beyond the lessons and lullabies, our teachers are equalizers. They are dream igniters. They are on the front lines of closing inequality gaps—providing stability, structure, and inspiration in communities that need it most.

🌟 Fun Fact: Whitney, the incredible talent behind , was once part of the now Woodlyn Academy family back in 2011! Since then, she has flourished into a successful licensed hairdresser entrepreneur, owning her own salon, vending machines, and an online apparel business. 🙌 She’s also a proud Chester, PA native, continuing to inspire and give back to her community. ❤️

Another successful Halloween celebration in the books! At Penrose and Woodlyn Academy we pride ourselves in giving our families a safe and fun alternative to door to door trick or treating! We had so much fun, food, music, crafts, and activities galore! We cherish every opportunity to celebrate with our families and give back to our communities!
