Wait to prune these most stone fruit

Do not prune apricots (and cherries) now.

While winter pruning is encouraged for most (stone & pome) fruit trees it is not ideal for apricots or cherries.

We encourage you to mark your calendar for apricot & cherry pruning in late summer.

"Apricots should be pruned in late August to allow time for the pruning wounds to close. This will help to prevent Eutypa fungus from invading the tree. Allow 6 weeks prior to the beginning of winter rains for wounds to close." http://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/GARDEN/FRUIT/CULTURAL/apripruning.html

"Eutypa dieback, also known as Cytosporina, gummosis, and limb dieback, causes limbs or twigs to wilt and die suddenly in late spring or summer with the leaves still attached. Rough dark cankers may develop at pruning wounds. The bark has a dark discoloration with amber-colored gumming."
