You don’t have to fix their worry.

When kids feel nervous, our instinct is often to make the feeling go away.

“Don’t worry.”
“You’ll be fine.”
“There’s nothing to be nervous about.”

Those words come from love, but sometimes kids need something different!

They may simply need to hear:

“I know this feels hard.”

And then, rather than immediately solving the problem for them:

“What do you think might help?”

That combination sends two powerful messages:

“I understand how you feel.”

and

“I believe you can handle this.”

We can have empathy for the feeling without taking over the problem.

That’s how difficult moments can become opportunities to build confidence.

Simple Outdoor STEAM Activities for Preschool
These are easy to set up — but more importantly, easy to extend.

1. Go on a Nature Walk
No checklist needed. Just walk. Ask: What do you notice? What’s different from yesterday?
Builds observation and awareness

2. Explore Shadows
Watch shadows change throughout the day.
• Morning vs afternoon
• Long vs short
Ask: What changed? Why? Introduces early science concepts

3. Test the Wind
Use simple materials:
• Paper
• Leaves
• Fabric
Ask: What moves? What doesn’t? Explores force and movement

4. Combine Water + Dirt
Let children mix. Pour water into dirt. Watch what happens.
Ask: What changed? Hands-on science and cause/effect

5. Build With Natural Materials
Use: Sticks, Rocks, Leaves. Let children build and test. That’s engineering

Where STEAM Naturally Happens Outside
Science → weather, plants, movement
Technology → using simple tools like magnifiers or containers
Math → counting, sorting, comparing
Engineering → building and testing
Art → patterns, textures, nature-based design
