Big Man and Sweet Tooth
Two years ago, one of the visiting does of brought her fawn up the hill to visit the chickens and the bird feeders. "Cookie Doe" had been a frequent visitor to over the years and monitored my project from the field. I suspect she had also been part of the herd of deer who often helped themselves to the peaches, pumpkins, and lilies growing around the property.
When we first spotted her offspring with her, his spots were almost completely faded and I inferred the little skipper was going to be a buck. He seemed to have a thicker cap on his head and, though I usually default to using the pronoun "she", Cookie's kid just gave me a sense of "burgeoning buck". We started calling him "Quarter Buck".
Quarter became a regular here even after he stopped grazing with the rest of the group. He was spotted very early this season with his first set of tiny little antler buds and his gender reveal came as no surprise!
The surprise came earlier this week when Quarter showed up to the pond in the morning with his much larger fishing buddy. Quarter's new companion is sporting a much more well developed antler rack so he earned the name "Buck Fifty".
Both Quarter and Buck Fifty's antlers will continue to grow throughout the summer until the soft velvety covering on their racks is ready to shed. By fall, they will have the distinctive white tailed deer antlers and I hope they come by in September to show them off!
In the meantime, they've left me wondering about the socialization, feeding, range, and growth and development patterns of white tailed deer. It looks like I've got some summer research to do!

The Balance Before the Tipping Point
At 5:24 pm, we reached the point of balance on Earth, ushering in the spring of 2023. As we continue our journey around the sun, Earth's tilt towards the sun will provide us with longer days and warming temperatures. is waking up and everyone is eager to check out the drastic changes on the farm as plants and pond life begin to emerge from their winter dormancy.
Even Manny the Shadow Hunter and Layla Belle the Cuddle Kitty came down to check out the wood frog egg masses in the water and crayfish with their berry-like eggs tucked protectively under their tail. We are all excited for the lengthening days ahead!

Manny Paws
brought some lively winter cheer to today! With his calm demeanor, he taught 3rd graders about variations in personality traits in individuals of a species and they taught him that the science lab is a safe space for him.
As for his contribution to Environmental Club... Let's just say his lesson on "air pollution" brought tears to our eyes! 🤣

Solstice Supper
I arrived home at yesterday just in time for the Winter Solstice. Though the daylight hours will begin to slowly begin to return again, the coldest days of the season are still ahead. Fortunately for the does and their growing offspring, has been a sanctuary where they've found food, entertainment, and a place to bed down while building their fat stores and warm winter coats. I look forward to looking for their tracks in the snow!
