When you think of a “disengaged student,” who comes to mind?

The disruptive one? The one skipping class? The one asleep in the back of the room?

What if I challenged you to also think about the honor roll student struggling with undiagnosed learning challenges? The student carrying family or friendship stress that makes it hard to focus? Or the one working late shifts just to help keep the lights on?

Here’s what most of us miss:

The students who act out are actually crying for help. The students who retreat are hoping that someone will see them. And the students who find themselves somewhere in the middle? Well, they slip through the cracks the most. I know, because I was one of them.

I’ve just landed in Pittsburgh and I’m excited to share more about this in my upcoming session at the . Tomorrow, I’ll be unpacking a new way to see disengagement; not as defiance, but as disconnection.

Because disengagement isn’t always a choice amongst our Black and Brown students; it’s a response to systems that were never built for us.

As educators, we all want to see our students thrive—not just academically, but socially and emotionally. For marginalized high school students, who often face unique barriers, school should be a place where they feel empowered and included. Unfortunately, for many students, that’s not always the case.

Disengagement can stem from more than academic struggles; it often relates to unmet social and emotional needs. Marginalized students—particularly Black and Brown youth—may struggle with anxiety, a lack of confidence, or feeling like they don’t belong. Schools can play a pivotal role in reversing this disengagement by promoting leadership and personal development.

Here are three strategies to empower these students:

1. Train staff on SEL: Equip teachers and counselors with the tools to identify and address the social-emotional needs of students who might be struggling silently.
2. Create leadership opportunities: Offer students roles that let them lead and take ownership, whether through school clubs, student councils, or project-based learning.
3. Foster mentorship programs: Connect students with mentors who understand their struggles and can guide them toward success.

By addressing both social and academic needs, we can turn disengagement into empowerment and create a generation of resilient, capable leaders.

{Turning Anxiety into Confidence: Helping Your High Schooler Find Success}

High school can feel like a battleground for many marginalized students, especially when anxiety and self-doubt come into play. For parents, the hardest part is watching your child struggle, feeling unsure how to help them break free from the overwhelm.

Here’s where you can start: focus on small wins! Often, students become overwhelmed by the larger picture—midterms or final exams, graduation, college applications, social pressures—that they lose sight of what they can accomplish in the present.

Here are three ways to help:

1. Break down tasks: Help them identify one or two manageable goals each day. Completing a small assignment or studying for just 15 minutes can build momentum.
2. Create a judgment-free zone: Make space for open conversations where your child can express their fears and frustrations without fear of judgment.
3. Celebrate progress: Acknowledge their effort, even if they don’t see immediate success. Over time, these moments of validation can significantly boost their confidence.

Success is a journey, not a destination. When we focus on growth rather than perfection, students are more likely to stay engaged and motivated.

**School Leaders and Community Org. Leaders**:

Are you overwhelmed by the challenge of meeting the diverse needs of marginalized students, especially those struggling with disengagement, low motivation, or anxiety? Do you serve communities where students’ post-pandemic performance doesn’t reflect their true potential?

The truth is, many marginalized students face social, emotional, and academic challenges that are often mistaken for disinterest or disruption. Teachers, counselors, and administrators are stretched too thin to offer the individualized support these students desperately need.

But there’s a solution.

Research shows that schools fostering inclusive, supportive environments see student engagement improve by 15-20% and graduation rates for students of color increase by 10-15%.

So how do we make this happen?

I’m Jonelle M. Brown, a bilingual educator and advocate. I started NelleRose Educational Services to address the root causes of disengagement and provide actionable solutions. We help students build resilience, confidence, and leadership skills—empowering them for academic and personal success.

✨How BIG are you willing to dream?💭

I ask my students this question, and understandably, many feel limited by their current circumstances, financial situations, and family history.

I’d like to share with you a prayer that has guided my belief that greater things are possible for me and mine. It’s called the “Prayer of Jabez” — heard of it?

AND JABEZ CALLED ON THE GOD OF ISRAEL SAYING, “OH, THAT YOU WOULD BLESS ME INDEED, AND ENLARGE MY TERRITORY, THAT YOUR HAND WOULD BE WITH ME, AND THAT YOU WOULD KEEP ME FROM EVIL, THAT I MAY NOT CAUSE PAIN!” SO GOD GRANTED HIM WHAT HE REQUESTED.
1 Chronicles 4:10

Bless me indeed! Enlarge my territory! Guide me! Keep me from harm inflicted or done unto others! — What a request! But get this: Jabez, by name, was destined to live a hard and miserable life. Yet even he had the audacity to ask for more. And so can all of you.

STUDENTS: Great and marvelous things — good health, money, education, wellness — and more are destined for you. Believe in the power of a strong, growth mindset. It’s all about how you think and feel about yourself.

I encourage my students to dream bigger than they can imagine. What are you dreaming about? Share your dreams in the comments so that others can pour into you as well. ⬇️
