UNDERSTANDING YOUR MILL RATE
Informed Community - Strong Schools
What is a mill rate?
Property tax: The property tax mill rate is used to calculate the Districtโs share of local property taxes. The rate is calculated by dividing the total amount of money a taxing body (school district, county, etc.) needs to collect from property owners to operate by the total value of all property within its boundaries.
A mill rate, or millage rate, is the amount of property tax charged per $1,000 of a property's assessed value. Local governments and taxing entities set these rates to fund public services like schools, roads, and emergency services.
Calculating Property Taxes Using Mills
One "mill" equals $1 of tax per $1,000 of assessed value. To calculate your tax burden, you can look up your property's assessed value and apply the following formula:
{Property Tax Owed} = Assessed Value divided by 1000 multiplied by {Mill Rate}
Example:
If your local taxing authority has a total mill rate of 7 and your property's assessed value is $200,000, the calculation is:
$200,000 / 1000 x 7 = $1,400 in annual property taxes.
