Lindsay Orem Consulting Helping families, schools, nonprofits, and community leaders navigate complex systems with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.

With more than 25 years of experience in education, special education leadership, advocacy, consulting, and organizationa I am a parent, a past educator and behavior consultant. I have a real passion for helping parents understand how much power they have. We often feel helpless, but, as an educator, I have always felt like parents were my greatest tool. Parents truly want what's best for their kids. I am here to help you find out how to recognize and build your child's strengths.

Here’s today’s back-to-school nugget for parents:

If you ask, “How was school?” you’re probably going to get one answer: “Fine.”

Try asking a more specific question:

“What was the best part of your day?”

“What felt hard today?”

Or my favorite: “Do you want me to listen, help you think it through, or help you take action?”

That last question matters because sometimes our kids need our help—but sometimes they just need a safe place to land.

One back-to-school nugget at a time—because this is a marathon, not a sprint.

IT - IS- DONE!
The most fun item I have created in a long time! And I think it's SO GOOD!

Reverse coloring turns coloring into a cognitive exercise. Instead of being given outlines to fill in, children are given color, shape, and visual information and asked to decide what they see. This encourages visual processing, creative problem-solving, cognitive flexibility, planning, and spatial reasoning. Because there is no single “right” picture, children also practice making independent choices, adapting their ideas, and trusting their own interpretation.

You don't have to see what anyone else sees!

I’ve been thinking a lot about the power of the next good decision.

Not the perfect plan. Not fixing everything at once. Not pretending the last choice didn’t happen.

Just the next one.

Make the call. Tell the truth. Apologize. Finish the task. Drink the water. Go to bed. Stop making the situation worse.

One bad decision does not have to become a pattern, and one hard day does not get to decide the direction of your life.

Sometimes grace looks a lot less dramatic than we expect.

Sometimes it simply looks like choosing better in the next ten minutes.

That idea became one of my favorite chapters in America—We Have a Problem because I need the reminder as much as anyone:

The next decision may not fix everything, but it can change the direction

Friday Reminder 💛

You do not have to understand every part of special education to be a strong advocate for your child.

You are allowed to ask questions.
You are allowed to request clarification.
You are allowed to say, “I need more time to think about this.”
And you are allowed to expect your concerns to be heard.

A good school partnership does not require parents to know all the answers. It requires everyone at the table to remain focused on the child.

Take a breath this weekend. You are learning, advocating, and doing more than you probably realize.

Know a parent who needs this reminder? Please share it with them.
