The Kindergarten classes read the book The Foolish Tortoise by Eric Carle. After reading the story we talked about texture, clay, and building in clay (slipping and scoring). We stepped on our clay turtle shells to leave texture on their shells from our shoes. After they were fired in the kiln, the students learned about glaze and how it would brush on matte but after going in the kiln a second time would come out shiny.

The second grade art classes have been studying Australian Aboriginal Art and the concept of patiently using dots of paint to create bright patterns and designs.

There are currently 14 classes working with clay and creating various pottery masterpieces. Due to being up to my elbows in clay most of the day, I haven’t captured many pictures of projects in progress.

1st Grade: Students are reading Arnie the Doughnut and are studying doughnut artists Andy Warhol and Jae Yong Kim. They are currently creating their own clay doughnut and learning about the special clay oven (Kiln).

3rd Grade: Students learned about National Bobblehead day on January 7th and the origin of bobbleheads. There’s even a Bobblehead museum in Mikwaukee. They are currently creating animal themed bobbleheads.

4th Grade: Students are learning about Native American pottery and the technique of making coil pots. They are practicing slipping and scoring while adding on animal extremities, heads and accessories.

5th Grade: Students are perfecting the pinch pot to make crazy birds. After the birds are glazed and fired the students will explore adding other mediums to their work like wire, beads and feathers.

6th Grade: Students studied the history and origin of the piggy bank. A focus was placed on making two pinch pots and welding them together with scoring, slipping and smoothing. Their project will consist of a critter bank of their choosing. Ask your students about the importance of projects being no thicker than a Double Stuffed Oreo or no bigger than their thumb 😬.

7th Grade: Students studied the history of Ugly Face Jugs, Pottersville and lead poisoning, and stages of clay. They are creating silly face mugs that emphasize the art vocabulary of proportion and exaggeration.

8th Grade: Students studied Unity in art and how it creates a sense of oneness within an artwork. For their clay project they had to hand build four figures that were different but had a uniting theme.

Kindergarten has already made clay turtles and 2nd grade has made clay succulent sloths.

The first grade art classes learned about snowy owls and how to break a painting down into easier steps. After painting snowy owls, they created a snowy owl sculpture using pine cones, cotton, felt, googly eyes, and Sharpie markers. This unit just happened to correspond with the Birds of Prey Assembly that the entire school attended and students learned about owls, hawks, and falcons.
