Another American icon has passed. You'd be hard pressed to find a stronger advocate for the preservation of the family farm, and for environmental protection to sustain farming, over the last fifty years. RIP Wendell Berry.

A Kentucky farmer, he railed against agribusiness and championed small family farms and the environment, winning widespread acclaim.

Tonight, we are remembering Dolly Parton, who was a beloved entertainer but also a champion for the Appalachian region. Her legacy includes a passion for literacy and her beloved Imagination Library, which continues to put millions of books into the hands of children. She was proud of her east Tennessee roots, and left behind the gifts of her music and philanthropy, inspired by these mountains.

Applications are open until April 30th for the next round of Virginia Humanities at UVA Wise grants! This program supports projects that amplify the stories of Southwest Virginia and show how the humanities bring communities together through dialogue and shared understanding. Nonprofits in Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, and Wise counties are eligible to apply for up to $5,000 in funding.
