Good afternoon. As some of you may have seen or heard via the news or social media, the federal government has proposed changes to the Head Start Program Performance Standards. These Performance Standards are the rules that guide every Head Start to ensure that the program is providing quality care and services to children and families. Some of these changes could significantly impact those we work to support by:
1. Eliminating essential screenings that catch concerns related to hearing, vision, dental, developmental, etc.;
2. Changing staff-to-child ratios to have fewer teachers in the classroom to support the children and maintain a safe environment;
3. Less staff and resources to support children with disabilities;
4. Eliminate bus aides who keep children safe and buckled during transport;
5. Reducing/eliminating coaching support for staff and mental health support for children.
The National Head Start Association has worked with Head Start parents (past and present) to write a letter asking the government to protect the Head Start standards that have been in place for years and have allowed the program to be an asset in our communities. We ask that you follow the link below to read the drafted letter and sign it in support of not only Wood County Head Start, but Head Start programs across the country. Signatures are due by September 30th.
