Heidi Slinkman manages Gaynor Cranberry Company west of Wisconsin Rapids. She also co-founded Cranberry Learning, Inc., to educate students about cranberries and cranberry career pathways. She tells Brownfield, “We recognize that there’s plenty of talent and opportunity no matter where you live and no matter what language you speak, that you have the opportunity to be a cranberry farmer, a cranberry food scientist, a truck driver, a soil specialist, or a researcher, for example.

Many farms employ Spanish-speaking workers, but Slinkman says there is a need to translate cranberry learning materials into French because of the similar cranberry workforce shortages in Quebec, Canada. “That access to bilingual proficiency, there’s a gap there, so we understand that if we want to be able to connect with growers and workforce, ag force, we need to be able to meet them where they are, including their language.”

Slinkman says the Cranberry Learning tools help teach math, English, art, physics, and science with cranberry farming examples.

Heidi Slinkman discusses Cranberry Learning Inc. and the efforts to expose people to possible careers in cranberry farming with Brownfield’s Larry Lee.

Happy Vitamin C Day!

Did you know cranberries are a natural source of vitamin C—and have been valued for it for centuries? Early sailors even brought cranberries on long sea voyages to help prevent scurvy, thanks to their ability to stay fresh and retain nutrients over time. Today, cranberries continue to be studied for their beneficial effect on urinary tract health, oral health, cardiovascular disease, cancer, glycemic response, and infections such as H. pylori bacteria.

What’s your favorite agriculture-related book? 📚🌱

For those who enjoy learning about farming—and especially cranberries—we have two beautiful titles we love to share: Cranberries from A–Z and Time for Cranberries. Both celebrate the story, science, and spirit behind this unique crop.

You’ll find them in our online store, “The Shop,” where our cranberry favorites come together—much like they do on the farm.

If you’re building your agriculture bookshelf or looking for a thoughtful gift, they’re a wonderful place to start.

With the possible exception of a few fresh fruit bogs, Massachusetts cranberry harvest is now complete. Growers and their crews worked tirelessly since mid September to harvest this year's crop, and we are incredibly proud to celebrate their commitment to feeding communities and their ongoing stewardship of the land.

Cranberry vines will now go dormant until the spring, but the same cannot be said for the growers. Preparations for next season are already underway and off-season maintenance activities like cleaning ditches; pruning vines; and repairing flumes, dams, and equipment are taking place.
