Is screen time affecting your child’s athletic development? 📱🏀

Maybe the better question isn’t how many hours they’re spending on screens, but what those hours are replacing.

Research shows that higher recreational screen time is associated with less physical activity and poorer sleep habits among teens. But that doesn’t mean every hour spent gaming or watching videos is harmful.

For young athletes, it’s worth paying attention to what’s getting squeezed out: sleep, recovery, movement, free play, and real-life connections.

What do you say when your child walks off the court after a terrible game?

Our instinct as sports parents is often to fix it, explain it, or make the disappointment go away. But sometimes, what young athletes need most is the space to feel it and the security of knowing one bad performance doesn’t change how we see them.

A mistake is a moment. It doesn’t have to become a label.

“If my child doesn’t specialize now, will they fall behind?”

It’s a question many sports parents face as youth sports become more competitive. But more training, earlier, isn’t automatically the better path.

Before narrowing your child’s athletic journey, consider the bigger picture: development, recovery, enjoyment, and what your child actually wants.

📖 Dig deeper in our blog, “Should Kids Specialize in One Sport? What the Research Says About Youth Sports Specialization,” available through the link in our bio.

🎙️ And hear the conversation in Episode 7: Should Kids Specialize in One Sport? of the Parenting Athletes Podcast on YouTube or Spotify.

Your child may love their sport. They may even become great at it. But their performance should never become the measure of who they are.

For our Season 1 finale, we’re looking at athlete identity and the role sports parents play in helping young athletes see beyond the wins, awards, playing time, and setbacks.

Praise the whole child. Celebrate the character behind the achievement. And keep reminding them that their sport is something they do, not who they are.

🎙️ Episode 12: When Sports Becomes Your Child’s Identity is now available on YouTube and Spotify.
