Even when we're sweating, it is always joyful to spend time with student volunteers through the ECU Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement. Thank you to the 8 ECU students who joined us for the 9/11 Day of Service and shared their time and energy to work on improvements to our school campus. Together with school families, we made significant progress on the Primary playground pulling overgrown weeds and spreading new mulch. We enjoyed talking to the student volunteers about their own educational journeys and answering questions about Montessori education.

For Elementary students, each school year is organized around the Five Great Lessons, beginning with the Coming of the Universe and the Earth in the first weeks of school. This first great lesson explains the creation of our universe starting with the Big Bang and introduces subjects including astronomy, chemistry, and geology. 6th grade students help deliver the lesson, including the favorite activity of popping a balloon full of glitter for the Big Bang.

After the lesson, students work together across grades on associated activities, including making pictures of galaxies using smashed chalk and water.

We're looking forward to 3rd and 6th grade students delivering presentations on their selected topics related to the universe at the end of September.

August 31st marked the 156th anniversary of Maria Montessori's birth. At school, we remembered her life and reflected on the extraordinary gift she left to children across the world. Happy Birthday, Dr. Montessori!

The 2026-2027 school year has begun! This morning, we gathered to reflect on this year's school theme - Growing Love & Light inspired by the writings of Sonnie McFarland about the love light within each of us - and celebrate students moving up to Lower and Upper Elementary.

To officially start the year, together, the oldest and youngest student at school rang the bell 3 times to honor our past, have gratitude for our present, and hope for our future. Here's to a year of love, light, and peace!

Campers during Week 8 found ways to stay busy inside through all the rain, including playing lots of new games. This week also included another play, Where the Wild Things Are, which was adapted and led by this week's junior counselor, Wyn. Wyn is a GMS alumna who is now a rising 8th grader.

Week 8 is a wrap on summer camp 2026! As the wild rumpus ends, teachers are coming back into their classrooms to prepare for the upcoming year and we're looking forward to seeing students and families back in mid-August.

We were excited to restart our relationship with ECU theater programs this spring! Upper and Lower Elementary students (Grades 1-6) enjoyed multiple visits with ECU theater students. Together, the students created their own puppets to participate in skits written by the ECU students which showcased our school year theme, GIVE - Grace, Inspire, Volunteer,, and Energy.

A summer camp favorite activity is putting on a play. During Week 7, campers wrote a script, made props, planned costumes, and performed a play, Candy Forest Mystery, featuring lots of dragons. Making and eating chocolate ice cream was another highlight.

Assisting at camp this week as a junior counselor was Jonna, a GMS alumna who is now a rising junior.

This spring, Upper Elementary (4-6th grades) students Emilia and Blade directed the class for a performance of The Wizard of Oz. Together, they cast and directed the show, while the rest of the class helped create costumes, backdrops, and props. It was truly a labor of love and the students put on a spectacular performance for students and parents!

The fun continued in Week 6 of summer camp for Elementary students! Campers cared for the GMS garden and made flower bouquets from the garden flowers. There were lots of crafts from sidewalk chalk to Shrinky Dinks to sewing to using different mediums for art. Water Wednesday and cooling off with DannyGo videos inside provided some big body movement.

This week's alumna junior counselor was Rylan, who is now a rising sophomore.

We are grateful for the relationship we've developed with the Poe Center for Health Education in Raleigh and their excellent programs to support Upper Elementary students (4-6th grades) learning about puberty and healthy relationships. This spring, Poe Center staff visited us here at school for a fun and educational session.
