Ever heard someone say, “specific foods or drinks directly touch and negatively affect your vocal folds”?

BUSTED!🚫

In this video, you’ll see how the body functions during normal breathing and swallowing—and why your vocal folds don’t come into direct contact with food or liquid (unless it’s aspirated, which is a choking hazard!). Your airway and digestive tract are separate, thanks to the epiglottis, which directs food and drink away from your vocal folds and into your esophagus.

If you’re looking to hydrate your voice, the best way is through steam inhalation or a nebulizer, which directly moistens the folds. While drinking water is essential for overall hydration, it works indirectly and takes 24-48 hours to fully benefit your voice.

Want your voice to feel its best before singing? Stay hydrated consistently, use steam or a nebulizer, and take care of your instrument! 🎤✨

In light of the uncertainty of Hurricane Milton, and seeing that we are currently in the direct path with hurricane-force winds expected in our area, I have decided to cancel all lessons for Wednesday and Thursday. Lessons not rescheduled will receive a credit to the account.

Most Tuesday lessons will still be held unless I have contacted you personally with a conflict due to SCPS change in dismissal tomorrow.

Your safety is my #1 priority.

I plan to resume lessons as usual next week, but please look for updates. In the event of power outages at my house, I have a backup location nearby that is usually quick to have power and can teach from there.

NATS audition students- Sunday’s rehearsal is still scheduled to go on from 5-7pm, but I will update you if there are changes. Also, please consider scheduling a makeup lesson instead of a credit. We can fit it makeups on Monday, October 14th, pending storm damage and power outages.
