A friend of mine sent me a link for a guy over in Bartow that is supposedly teaching "Samurai" swordsmanship. I gave it my usual shrug and I checked out the website where I was confronted with the usual red flags of "Ninja"

There are only a couple of Ryuha that actually can trace their linage to clans of Ninja. So i reserve judgement at the moment until I sneak over and take a class but for now, there are multiple flags on the ground.

I am deeply saddened today as I learned of the passing of a really great Sensei and all-around cool guy.

Bob Elder Sensei was a fixture in the martial arts community for as long as I can remember. I remember I bought my first hakama from him at East Coast Martial Arts Supply about a million years ago. He was always easygoing and had an amazing sense of humor and his doors were always open.

Over the years we trained in some classes as fellow students and in some classes, he was the teacher and I was the student. He was always cool in that he never let his position and his ego get ahead of treating you like a brother warrior.

Don't get me wrong he commanded respect but it was because people who trained with him and were taught by him loved him not only as a teacher, but as a brother, and as a mentor.

He and I had our fair share of interesting discussions, and I will miss our conversations. Although he has passed, he really hasn't gone anywhere because I will always see him sitting quietly with his arms crossed as I screw up a cut.

He will be missed.
