Meet Lauren Jones! She is our Oshkosh Scholarship recipient who has the exciting adventure of going to Alaska Floats and Skis for her SES rating. Congratulations and Thank you, Don and Missy Lee of Alaska Floats and Skis.
Read a little about her:
My interest in seaplanes started because of my father. As a child, we would spend hours flipping through Trade-a-Plane's yellow pages and Controller magazines looking at seaplanes. My father has a fascination with seaplanes that he impressed upon me from a young age.
I will never forget my first interaction with a seaplane. My family went on vacation to Alaska. We were staying in Anchorage, Alaska. Every day there were numerous seaplanes that would be flying overhead. I could not help but be fascinated watching those seaplanes land and take off from Lake Hood. I was in awe of the floats hanging from cubs. I wanted more than anything to get a taste of what I dreamt to be on of the most exhilarating types of flying, watching the hustle and bustle of the many floatplanes. I had never seen so many aircraft on the water before in my life - I was enamored by it all.
Flash forward three years later to GirlVenture camp 2017, I got the opportunity to fly in a Goose upfront in the right seat at Oshkosh. Watching the seaplane pilot confidently point the aircraft into the wind and push the throttles forward, I immediately thought, "this is the coolest sort of flying I have ever done." The excitement of hearing the water we were cutting through on takeoff and seeing it sprinkle on the windscreen has stuck with me to this day.
Seaplanes are the mix of my favorite two worlds - flying and being outdoors going on an adventure. Flying is always an adventure, but seaplanes pose a different challenge. That challenge is the aspect of being on the water and have knowledge about the water and not just the air. I love the optionality of seaplanes in terms of being able to land essentially wherever there is water. The thought of being able to fly from lake to lake is thrilling to me. I want to attain a seaplane rating because I love flying. I love continuing to learn as much as I possibly can about flying, and seaplanes have always been an avenue of aviation I have dreamed of experiencing as a pilot. Becoming a seaplane pilot would be completing a childhood dream of mine.
This scholarship will make it possible for me to be able to afford to earn a seaplane rating. As a young aviation professional, I currently do not have the funds to obtain a seaplane rating. I am grateful for the opportunity to potentially obtain my seaplane rating.
