We're proud to report that most of Winter Haven's sandwich shops are still up and running. As long as you take proper precautions, there's nothing wrong with grabbing a sandwich to go. If you're worried about your favorite local sandwich shops's survival during this time, consider purchasing a hefty gift card (you're going to spend it with them anyway) to help them make it through the coming months. ***This may not be a serious page, but please take flattening the curve seriously.

It's back, and it's pretty much the same very excellent Popeye's chicken sandwich we had back in August. Happy National Sandwich Day everyone!

As you prep for Hurricane Dorian, don't forget, deli meats and bread can be a great way to keep your family fed after the hurricane. So stock up your cooler with at least 5 pounds of assorted deli meats and cheeses per person in your household. You'll be glad you did!

As we predicted last week, Popeye's, utterly and completely unprepared for success on this scale, has pulled their revolutionary chicken sandwich. This is why we can't have nice things, America.

Nutwood has a spicy chicken sandwich on special this week, and the council took notice. Created by Michelin-starred chef Steven Rojas, this sandwich was worth flying down the Nashville Sandwich Council to give it a try and they were wholly impressed, if not a little shaken by the experience. So what makes this sandwich so special? A lot of it comes down to the fact they are using tenders, not a whole honking breast, so it ensures consistent volume to surface area ratios throughout the sandwich. Science FTW! Additionally the batter transitions from a super crunchy outside to this delicious buttermilk coating underneath that just folds into the chicken brilliantly, which is so tender it's hard to know where it begins. The entire experience, the texture, the flavor profile, the perfect amount of heat would have earned this the title of best spicy chicken sandwich in Winter Haven, IF it were a regular menu item. But if one day this item does make it to their regular menu there will be a grand ceremony to mark the occasion. You have one more day to go try this masterpiece, we heartily suggest you do so!!!

Why aren’t you eating lunch at Nutwood? We know many of you are but if you aren’t you need to sit there and ask yourself what it is that you are doing that so important that you can’t take 30 minutes to pop on over and have a meal that’s going to blow your face off at least once a week? We were there this afternoon handing out our ceremonial SCWH ribbon sashes for the upcoming Tremendous Sandwiching, and each of the fourteen of us there had these two incredible open-faced sandwiches below. One is a pimento cheese and arugula tartine with tomato soup and the other an open-faced steak sandwich both atop Michelin-starred chef Steven Rojas’s incredible sourdough bread. The fact there was a single open table at lunch was confusing to us!

The first Publix opened in Winter Haven, Florida. This is a true success story for the Sandwich Council of Winter Haven Florida and one of many through the years. We're not sure why WFTV didn't reach out to us for a photo of an actual Publix sub from our sandwich photo archive, but we sure are proud of Publix Deli for receiving this distinction.
