KAJUKENBO
Spinning Shoulder thrown (Ippon seoi nage)
1. Both fighters are fighting out of a right lead.
2. Punch in your grip with the left hand striking the pocket of the shoulder as you step with the let foot toward one o'clock. The hit should be hard enough to make opponent step back. Immediately grip his shirt at the area struck.
3. Pivot 180 degrees counter clockwise on the left foot bringing your right knee up toward your chest.
4. At the completion of the pivot drop your right foot down and back between your opponent's feet. Your right arm comes up and traps the opponent's right arm at the armpit, pinching his arm in the crook o your elbow.
5. To pick the opponent up, the let foot steps back to and next to your right foot. The opponent's feet should start to come off the ground as you step back. Straighten your legs to bring his feet completely off the ground.
6. Finish the throw by twisting your upper body by taking your right elbow toward your left knee.

Book Review: Dynamic Kajukenbo by Angelo Ferrer
Dynamic Kajukenbo is a standout contribution to modern Kajukenbo literature. In this book, Barron Shepherd brings a rare and valuable perspective, blending his experience as a Kajukenbo black belt with deep, practical knowledge of modern Kodokan Judo.
What makes this book especially relevant today is how clearly it bridges a gap many Kajukenbo practitioners feel but may not always be able to articulate. Kajukenbo has always emphasized the transition from striking into grappling, yet relatively few modern practitioners have formal training or rank in contemporary judo. Shepherd fills that gap beautifully. He doesn’t assume the reader is a judo expert. Instead, he breaks down fundamental, high-percentage judo techniques in a way that fits seamlessly into Kajukenbo’s striking-to-grappling philosophy.
The result is not just a “Kajukenbo book,” but a practical blueprint for how the two arts naturally support each other in modern training. The techniques are presented with clarity and purpose, making them accessible even to those without a judo background, while still offering depth for experienced grapplers.
A particularly interesting element of the book is Shepherd’s inclusion of tomahawk concepts and how they relate to Kajukenbo principles. This adds an unexpected but fascinating layer, showing how traditional weapons concepts can still inform modern martial understanding.
Overall, Dynamic Kajukenbo serves as a strong modern link between Kajukenbo, judo, and contemporary grappling. It is an excellent resource for instructors and practitioners who want to evolve their understanding of how striking and grappling truly integrate in live practice.

Jab Counter
1. Both are fighting out of a right foot forward posture.
2. Attacker throws a right lead straight punch (jab) Defender parries the jab inward with a left inward parry.
3 and 4. Defender shuffles forward toward one o'clock as he delivers a cross with the same hand he parried the jab with.
Drill to build timing: partner feeds repetitive jabs at half-speed, progressing to full power with body protection, ensuring reliability under adrenaline.

For years, I've experimented with designing Kajukenbo logos and patches, but none ever felt quite right. These past few days, I dove back in with fresh determination for the umpteenth time. As the saying goes, "You'll know it when you see it"—and the moment I finished this one, I knew: it was perfect. I got the idea from the title and subtitle of my book. My Kajukenbo book was and still is my favorite book project. An expanded edition and curriculum manual is in the works.
