Great readers don’t just move their eyes across the page. They play the game. Son (or daughter), before you start, preview the chapter like a coach studying the field: scan headings, pictures, and bold words. Ask yourself, What’s this about? What do I already know?

While you read, stay in the game. Pause after each section and ask, What just happened? Why does it matter? Jot a word or two in the margin.

If your mind wanders, back up and re-read. There's no shame in that. Even champions run the same drill twice.

After you finish, close the book and tell someone (like me) about it! If you can say it in your own words, you own it. If you can’t, you know exactly where to go back.

Reading isn’t passive. It’s a workout for your mind. Train it like you want to win.

Riley didn’t know where to start.
