SummerStrings is an inspiring three-week chamber music intensive with UNCSA’s award winning string faculty.

In an atmosphere of rich musical immersion students from age 12-22 enjoy private lessons, master classes, chamber music coaching and multiple performance opportunities in the beautiful concert halls of UNCSA. Highlights include a chamber orchestra performance of Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 , a unique Karen Tuttle Viola Workshop, yoga classes and Alexander Technique lessons. SummerString

This year from July 8 - 21, 2018, Summer Strings brings you the best of both worlds - Classical and jazz/bluegrass!

Bring your game to a new level with UNCSA's internationally acclaimed artist faculty, including chamber music and solo masterclasses with cellist Brooks Whitehouse and Europe's top violin teacher, Ida Bieler.

Then bring your level to a new game with state of the art breakout sessions in jazz, bluegrass and extended string techniques with award-winning jazz musician Christian Howes.

You'll find yourself rehearsing a Beethoven quartet in the morning and jamming on a twelve-bar blues in the afternoon.

This Tuesday join us for the season finale of SummerMusic! at UNCSA’s Watson Hall at 7:30. The concert is free and open to the public, and this week features UNCSA Faculty guitarist Joseph Pecoraro and Asheville guitarist Steve Newbrough with works of Tarrega and Rodrigo, UNCSA composer and Michael Rothkopf’s Chaconne for Piano and Computer. The concert closes with Beethoven’s great Archduke Trio, featuring SummerStrings director and violinist Janet Orenstein along with cellist Brooks Whitehouse and pianist Allison Gagnon. Please join us for our grand finale!

UNCSA's own ida Bieler joins Allison Gagnon and Sheila Browne for Josef Suk's Four Pieces, and Marinu's Madrigals on the free SummerMusic series this Tuesday June 28th at 7:30 in Watson Hall. And don't forget the Trout Quintet to close, when Sungil Lee, Brooks Whitehouse, and Paul Sharpe join Gagnon and Browne for this classic favorite of the repertoire.

Join us Tuesday June 28 at 7:30 pm in UNCSA's Watson Hall for the second of three free SummerMusic! concerts featuring guests and faculty from our SummerMusic intensives.. This concert centers around the much-beloved Trout Quintet of Schubert, with special guest violinist Sungil Lee and UNCSA’s own string professors Sheila Browne, Brooks Whitehouse, and Paul Sharpe. In addition, UNCSA violin professor Ida Bieler first joins Allison Gagnon to start the program with Josef Suk’s remarkable Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, and then joins forces with Sheila Browne for Martinu’s charming Three Madrigals. This past Tuesday’s concert was a roaring success, and this promises to be another for sure. Please join us!

SummerMusic! free concert, Tuesday June 21 at 7:30! Guest artist Suzannne Rousso joins SummerStrings violinist Janet Orenstein, cellist Brooks Whitehouse and pianist Allison Gagnon for Bridge's Phantasy in F # minor.

Violist Suzanne Rousso accepted an appointment as artistic director of the Mallarmé Chamber Players based in Durham, NC in 2008. She feels very fortunate to be able to program and perform chamber music for a living! Her previous administrative engagements included service as the Director of Education for the NC Symphony and Director of Operations for the Portland (Maine) Symphony. During this latter period she was on the faculty of the Eastern Music Festival and served as that organization's personnel manager. Rousso was educated at the Curtis Institute of Music, the Eastman School of Music and at New England Conservatory earning Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in viola performance. She is a member of the Board of Arts North Carolina, a state-wide arts advocacy organization and is currently President of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 500, Raleigh.

SummerMusic! free concert , Tuesday June 21 at 7:30 features Sungil Lee performing Bach's Partita no. 2 in D minor.

Violinist Sungil Lee has received international acclaim as a soloist, concertmaster and chamber musician. A winner of the Paganini International, Washington International and Bach International Violin Competitions, Mr. Lee has been a featured soloist with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. He has also served as concertmaster for the Pittsburgh Symphony, and as both soloist and concertmaster for the Charlotte and Grand Rapids Symphonies. As a recitalist, he has appeared at Carnegie Hall, and collaborated in chamber music with such notables as Beveridge Webster, Colin Carr, Paul Katz and the Meliora Quartet. We are honored to welcome Mr. Lee and four of his accomplished students to SummerStrings.
