Ever since I was a little girl, the Titanic disaster has fascinated me. Not in the shallow way of spectacle or curiosity alone, but in the deeper, stranger way that certain tragedies seem to attach themselves to the human imagination across generations.

There is something haunting about that moment in history. The elegance of the Edwardian world poised at the edge of modernity. The confidence in progress and permanence. And then, suddenly, the unimaginable rupture of loss beneath a cold Atlantic sky.

The overwhelming tragedy of it is alluring in an almost incomprehensible way because it forces us to confront so many ideas at once: love, mortality, class, memory, grief, heroism, and the fragile illusion that life is predictable.

That is part of why I chose The Secrets of Flowers by Sally Page as the first selection for The Afterward, the new free online book club from Death Education Central.

Together, we’ll explore stories that help us think more deeply about death, loss, transformation, and what it means to continue living after life changes forever.

Yeah!

We want to share some exciting news from one of our own! Fellow FCANC board member Jane Callahan Dornemann has just published a book, and we're confident it will be right up your alley.

A Death Doula's Guide to a Meaningful End (Chicago Review Press, April 2026) draws on Jane's 7+ years as an end-of-life doula to explore what it means to face death with honesty, courage, and care. It's part memoir, part practical guide—surprisingly funny, deeply human, and exactly the kind of book you'll want to press into the hands of someone you love.

As people who think seriously about the end of life, you are exactly the audience Jane had in mind. You can purchase your very own copy from www.Bookshop.org and other major retailers.

Please join us in celebrating Jane and this wonderful contribution to the death care community!

🦋 Join Bereaved Families of Ontario – Southwest on Sunday, June 7th for a meaningful day of remembrance, connection, and hope. This year, we are introducing a new combined event: Seeds of Remembrance, followed by a community Memorial Walk.

🐝Our new seed-bomb release uses native, pollinator-friendly seeds that support bees, butterflies, and other essential pollinators. This living tribute allows families to honour their loved ones in a way that continues to grow and flourish—transforming remembrance into lasting impact.

Following the seed-bomb release, participants are invited to walk together through Springbank Park, sharing in reflection, community, and support.
