Preparing highly capable, compassionate PAs who deliver patient-centered care since 1969. Campuses in Winston-Salem & Boone, NC.

The Wake Forest PA program is unique for its emphasis on active learning. We use small group, problem-based learning to inspire and support curiosity, integration, leadership, and self-reflection as students build their knowledge and skill bases. Through small groups, students interact with patient cases based on real-world medical problems, then break to research answers to questions or knowledge

Wake PA students and faculty recently hosted Bandages and Brews, an event to teach members of the public how to enjoy the great outdoors more safely and prepare for emergencies they might encounter.

The Wilderness Medicine Certificate group from Wake PA’s Boone campus organized the event, held at the Appalachian Brewing Company.

Pictured with the volunteer group is Kenneth Harbert, PhD, MHA, PA-C Emeritus, a clinician, medical educator and administrator, who helped establish eight PA programs across the United States.

Community service during orientation has become a tradition for incoming Wake PA students over the last few years. Recently, the Class of 2028 worked on projects with nine different organizations in and around Winston-Salem.

This annual activity is a great opportunity for incoming students to get to know each other, faculty and staff members, and the communities where they are now living and learning.

Thanks to all our community partners – Sunnyside Ministry, Senior Services Inc. of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, SECU Family House- Winston Salem, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, City Lights Ministry, Clemmons Food Pantry,
Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Piedmont Triad, Jerry Long YMCA, and the Dwelling – for helping to make this such a special afternoon!

From surgical knot tying to suturing to complex wound closure, our second-year students will have their CYP workshops all sewn up in no time! 🪡 🙂

Shout out to Class of 2026 grad Alex Dayton for demonstrating the steps in wound closure, and faculty member Kelsey Kehlri and her brother for designing these new wound closure practice kits. Fake skin + Tide pods > raw chicken + mayonnaise, for sure! 🩺

🎓🖤💛 Wake PA Alumni Spotlight🎓🖤💛 Jill Nelson PA-C, Wake PA Class of 2020, recently returned from training with the Wilderness Medicine Society on Mount Everest!

While there she did a site visit to the Everest Emergency Room, learned about altitude illness and oxygen deprivation, and honed her skills using limited supplies at 18.5k feet. 🗻😮

When she’s not trekking in the high altitude, Nelson is an urgent care PA in Washington state.

Members of the Class of 2028 learned their way around 525 Vine and BGCME last week during the pre-orientation scavenger hunt.

Students tracked down various classrooms and labs, as well as the student lounge, their mailboxes, and the Medical Grounds coffee shop. Along the way, they met with faculty and staff and collected Wake PA swag, including two t-shirts and a can koozie.

Representatives from Counseling and Well-Being Services, Alumni Affairs and Financial Aid, and other School of Medicine resource offices had tables along the route with additional gifts and information for the incoming class.

Clinical Year Prep (CYP) kicked off for the Class of 2027 last week!

One of the first skills workshops was Scrub, Gown & Glove, where students learned how to scrub up and stay sterile while putting on their gloves and gowns for surgery.

Workshops also include dos and don’ts for students while they are in the operating room, tips that can help them be a valuable part of the healthcare team during their surgical rotations and get the most from the experience. 🏥

Last Friday, the Department of PA Studies hosted a retirement celebration for Admissions Administrator Elise Gmuca.

For over 15 years, Ms. Gmuca facilitated applications, interviews, acceptances and matriculation for all incoming PA program students. She also managed countless other duties, including planning most of the commencements and student award ceremonies during her time with the department.

Many current students and alumni clearly remember when they got the call from Ms. Gmuca letting them know that they had been accepted to Wake PA. Colleagues reached out to alumni and collected dozens of those stories for a booklet titled “Where were you when Ms. Gmuca called?” They also created a photo book with pictures of Ms. Gmuca with staff, faculty, and students over the years.

Both these special collections of memories were presented to Ms. Gmuca at her retirement celebration, along with a grandparent membership to the North Carolina Zoo.

Friday’s festivities were emotional and bittersweet. We wish Ms. Gmuca a wonderful retirement with more time to spend with her husband, sons, and grandchildren, but we’ll greatly miss her presence, personality, and kindness.
