🇺🇸 As part of the America250 celebration, the City of Winston-Salem and the Forsyth County Historic Resources Commission invite you to the unveiling of the latest addition to the North Carolina Civil Rights Trail.

Join us on Sat. May 30, 2026, at 3 p.m. at the YWCA Best Choice Learning Center (1031 Highland Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC).

The City of Winston-Salem joins communities across the state to mark sites critical to the Civil Rights Movement. This historic marker will commemorate the 1914 State Supreme Court decision in State v. Darnell, a landmark ruling that curtailed cities’ power to enforce residential segregation. The marker is provided by the NC African American Heritage Commission, with support from the NC Office of Archives & History, Visit NC, and the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

Dear Community Supporters of the Winston-Salem Freedom Schools,

Due to the ongoing winter weather situation impacting our city, we have made the decision to postpone the Martha Bassett Band show until Saturday, February 28th.

Please continue to share with your neighbors and friends. It is going to be an amazing concert benefiting a great program, which is plenty of reason for us to pack the house on the 28th!

We thank you for your flexibility and will see you soon. Stay safe!

Families of Sunnyside Freedom School:
We have a very exciting announcement about our Wednesday evening Family Engagement meeting!

We are bringing in three partners to help our families discuss topics around rental advocacy and homeownership opportunities.

Bianca Green, the chief loan officer for Forsyth County’s First-Time Homebuyer Program will come to share information about becoming ready to purchase a home, and receive downpayment assistance.

Michele Mitchell, Director of Mortgage Banking at Piedmont Federal Bank will come to share strategies for starting to save for rental deposits or home purchases. She can also provide details on what makes someone eligible for a home loan through a bank, and how to improve your credit scores and debt-to-income rates.

Adolfo Briceno, Human Relations Specialist and Hispanic Outreach for the City of Winston-Salem will come to discuss tenant/landlord disputes and how to advocate for your rights and needs when renting from a property owner.

Many of you stated that you would like information and support around renting and home ownership. We hope this will help.

Program starts at 6pm.
