We are proud to celebrate Dr. Pat Lord's career as Teaching Professor of WFU Biology on the occasion of her retirement. Congratulations, Pat! 👏🎩 at Wake Forest University
----
"Dr. Lord has been one of the most versatile educators in the Biology Department, teaching a wide range of courses during her 25-year career at Wake Forest. These courses have included non-major introductory classes, core courses such as genetics, and upper-level electives in virology and immunology – and all of these courses were popular because of Pat. Pat focused on student-centered teaching and incorporated novel experiential learning opportunities into her courses. One example of this was a project in which students developed and presented an exposition on viruses — a pedagogical exercise that demanded student engagement with the scientific content, communication of that to the public, and fostered a collaborative spirit among her students. In addition to her teaching, Pat has been a consummate departmental and institutional citizen, providing critical service and thoughtfulness in a host of different areas. Pat was the Health Professions advisor for many years, and additionally served on the Faculty Senate and was a strong advocate for teaching professionals within the department and across the College.” – Dr. Erik C. Johnson, Chair and Professor of Biology

Congratulations to Dr. Sarah Nichols, new WFU Biology Ph.D., at Wake Forest University.👏🎩
————
Dr. Sarah Nichols ('25) is the winner of the 2025 Outstanding Biology Graduate Student Award. Her pioneering work on intracellular replication factories for rotavirus led to four publications in top journals, numerous conference presentations, excellent teaching, and campus-wide/departmental service on behalf of graduate students. This year is particularly auspicious as it is the 50th Anniversary of the Elton C. Cocke Award for Outstanding Biology Graduate Student. This makes Sarah the latest link in a long chain of exceptional young scientists coming out of the Wake Forest University Biology Department. In recognition of her scholarship, research achievements, and exceptional service, we are proud to bestow this award on Sarah.
