🎶✨ AND WE’RE BACK! ✨🎶

Happy first day of CMS Fall 2026! Today our halls filled back up with students, families, teachers, and LOTS of music, and we couldn’t be more excited for the semester ahead. 💛

We also kicked off a brand-new season of Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM) and Roots Appalachian Musicians (RAM)! 🎻🪕 This year, our Appalachian music community has grown to include young musicians ages 8–18 AND adults every Tuesday. We’ve got more ages, more instruments, more jamming, and even more opportunities to make music together.

Tonight was all about getting back into the groove, meeting new friends, learning tunes, and making music as a community. We’re just getting started! 🪕🎻🎶

👀 Want to join us? It’s not too late!

We still have room in JAM and RAM, along with openings in select private lesson studios at the UNCSA Community Music School.

We still have a few openings in our Step Into the Spotlight: Fundamentals of Solo Singing for Theatre and Beyond classes for ages 8–11, beginning next week!

Designed for beginning singers, this small-group class is the perfect place to build healthy vocal technique, confidence, and performance skills while singing age-appropriate songs from musical theatre, movies, and more, all in a supportive, fun environment.

And yes… they’ll get to perform! 🌟 The semester concludes with a solo singing recital where students can share what they’ve learned.

Choose the class time that works best for your family:

🎶 Mondays, 5:45–6:30 p.m. — Katie Muhlenkamp
🎶 Tuesdays, 5:15–6:00 p.m. — Krista Steinour
🎶 Thursdays, 6:15-7:00 p.m. — Alexandra Pawlus

Whether your child is already singing around the house nonstop or is just beginning to discover their voice, this is a wonderful way to help them grow as a singer and performer.

📅 Fall semester begins September 8

We love celebrating our students and the incredible things they accomplish, even when their learning takes them across the world! 🌎🎶

We’re so proud of Annika and grateful to her RCM Music Theory instructor, Yulia Roubtsova, for sharing this wonderful update:

"I'm pleased to hear that some of my students successfully combined travel and learning this summer! Annika Puwanant spent her summer between Sweden and Thailand, where she took the online RCM Music Theory Level 6 exam and earned High Honors. Well done!

Annika is a cellist and a choir singer. Music Theory enhances her sight-reading, rhythm, and pitch accuracy. It also gives her a deeper, more nuanced understanding of music.

Congratulations, Annika! Wishing you all the best with Level 7 next year!"

🎶 READ IT. PLAY IT. SING IT. 🎹🎼🎤

Want to help your young musician become stronger, more confident, and more well rounded this fall?

Our Saturday programs at the UNCSA Community Music School are designed to work together, and we would especially love to welcome new students into RCM Music Theory Levels 1 and 5!

📚 READ IT: RCM MUSIC THEORY

Led by our wonderful instructor, Yulia Roubtsova, RCM Theory helps students understand the why behind the music they already play and sing.

This fall we are offering Levels 1, 5, 7, and 8, with space especially available in Levels 1 and 5!

Level 1 is a great starting point for students newer to formal theory, building foundations in notation, rhythm, scales, key signatures, intervals, melody, and listening.

Level 5 is perfect for more experienced students ready to deepen their understanding and musicianship.

🎹 PLAY IT: GROUP PIANO

Build keyboard skills, reading, rhythm, harmony, and musicianship in a collaborative setting. You do not have to be a piano student to benefit from learning your way around the keyboard! Classes offered on Mondays and Saturdays with Noelia Morón and Marti Bessinger.

🎤 SING IT: CHORUS

Our Saturday choruses with UNCSA School of Music faculty member, Dmitri Shteinberg help students develop their voices, ensemble skills, confidence, and musical independence. This fall, choristers also have the exciting opportunity to perform during The Nutcracker’s Waltz of the Snowflakes! ❄️✨

And you don't have to choose just one! Combine Theory + Piano, Theory + Chorus, Piano + Chorus, or all three for a full Saturday of music making.

💛 Special discounts are available for students who dual or triple enroll!

If your child already takes private lessons, these programs are a wonderful way to build the skills that help everything they are learning start to click.

🎻 Come JAM with us this fall! 🪕🎶

Whether you already know your way around a fiddle or you’re picking up an instrument for the very first time, Junior Appalachian Musicians and Roots Americana Musicians (RAM) are all about learning, playing, and making music together.

And this fall, we’re especially excited to welcome younger musicians into the JAM family! 💛 We’ve added a group for ages 8–11, alongside our older youth and adult programs, making it easier for the whole family to find a place to play.

Learn fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, upright bass, traditional dance, and more while exploring the music and traditions of our region alongside an incredible community of musicians.

These videos are just a little peek at the fun we had last semester and this summer. No matter your age or experience level, there’s a place for you here. Beginners are absolutely welcome!

📅 Fall classes begin Tuesday, September 8!
