Tam Tam Mandingue Winston-Salem

The Masters say the djembe is a drum that speaks a language. What the djembe is speaking is a message of love, togetherness and peace. This is our mission.

TTM Winston-Salem is a branch of the world’s first international school of West African drumming, Tam Tam Mandingue, founded by world-renown Master Drummer Mamady Keita. The Masters say the djembe does not see color, race or gender. What the djembe sees is our hearts. The Masters say the djembe has no borders. If we all thought like the djembe, then we would not have so much trouble in the world.

This week our students were immersed in West African music and culture with engaging performances by the talented artist-educators from Living Rhythms! Through drumming, call-and-response singing, and dance, we learned about instruments and rhythms that are important to a variety of cultural traditions across Africa. Ask your student if they can remember the names (and hand motions) for the drums, or any of the songs and rhythms we learned!

Living Rhythms is a program of the Tam Tam Mandingue Winston-Salem. Thank you to our amazing performers, @Greg Ince and @Dakarai O. Ince, for sharing your expertise and energy with our school community! This cultural arts program was made possible with funding from the Wakefield Elementary School PTA and a grant from the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County
