The Artist of the Year program, which ran from 1987 to 2006 in partnership with the , celebrated outstanding artistic achievement and dedicated service to the arts in Winston-Salem. The award recognized artists whose work and contributions had a meaningful impact on both Sawtooth and the broader community, honoring individuals working across a wide range of artistic disciplines.

As part of the year-long celebration, each Artist of the Year created a limited-edition artwork and was recognized through a special exhibition, commemorative events, and featured publications that highlighted their accomplishments and artistic legacy.

To honor this celebrated program, all limited-edition artworks by past Artist of the Year recipients are now on view, showcasing a range of media including ceramics, fiber, painting, metal, photography, drawing, and sculpture.

Here’s a glimpse of some of the pieces included in our special 80th Anniversary exhibition, Making Space to Create, which celebrates the artists who have helped shape Sawtooth's creative legacy.

The exhibition is on view through June 20 and is free and open to the public - some of the limited editions are still available for sale. Take home part of Sawtooth's history today!

✨ Don't miss your chance to experience it before it's gone - Sawtooth's closed this Friday for Juneteenth!

🔨✨ Building skills, confidence, and something by hand—that’s what the wood shop is all about!

In Kirk Fry’s Hexagonal Lanterns class, students built lanterns while sharpening table saw skills, using jigs, gauges, and making precision cuts. As one student shared, “I love having the opportunity to use tools in a collaborative learning environment. My experience woodworking here has been so positive that it’s really encouraged me to keep coming back.”

Classes like this help students build skills they can carry far beyond the shop!
